ALPINE SKIING — Patrick Biggs: Patrick had an extremely exciting year as a Slalom skier recording 2 wins and several top 5 finishes in races held all over the world The highlight of his year was making the 2006 Olympic Team where he had a great first run. He trained hard last summer in Argentina, Chile and at Canada’s new Farnham Glacier Training site in British Columbia with his sights set on being in Whistler in 2010. He is a repeat winner from 2005.
ATHLETICS — Cross-Country Running – Danelle Woods: Danelle is a member of the Ottawa Lions Track and Field Club and started her season off by winning the Ontario High Schools Senior Girls Cross-Country Championships. She finished second in the O.T.F.A. championships and then capped off the season winning the National Junior Women’s Championships held in Vancouver. She will be a member of Canada’s Team that will be going to the World Championships to be held in Kenya in March, 2007.
ATHLETICS — Marathon Running: Liz Maguire: Liz is a member of the Ottawa Athletic Club who excels at running be it on a track, a road or a marathon course. She competed in the Chicago Marathon on Oct, 22, 2006, just 2 days short of her 40th. birthday and ran a personal best time of 2:54:55, an amazing 4 minutes faster than she has ever run before.
ATHLETICS — Road Racing: Liz Maguire: Liz has had her best year ever as a road racer and marathon runner. Running in 6 road races between March and Sept. of 2006 at distances that ranged from 5km to the Hamilton Around the Bay 30km, Liz had 6 finishes in the top 5 positions recording 1 second, 2 thirds, 2 fourths and 1 fifth. She is the complete runner.
ATHLETICS — Track and Field: Esther Akinsulie: Esther is a member of the Ottawa Lions Track and Field Club. In 2006, while competing in the Canadian National Senior Championships, she won both the 200 metres and 400 metres titles. Esther also represented Canada at the Pacific World Cup in Burnaby, B. C. and at the Francophone Games, held in Niger where she finished 7th in the 200 metres, 4h in the 400 metres and 2nd in the 4 X 100M relay. This runner who won 4 gold medals at the last Canada Summer Games aspires to make the 2008 Summer Olympic team and finish in the top three in her events.
BADMINTON — Joseph Rogers: This graduate of Ridgemont High School won the Ottawa High Schools men’s singles badminton championships and followed that up with a gold medal win at the OFSAA Championships. He also won the Canadian Under 19 singles championships which ranks him as the No. 1 singles player in Ontario and Canada. In 2006, Joseph won Badminton Canada’s Most Promising Athlete of the Year Award and the James Worrall Award from the Sport Alliance of Ontario. He represented Canada in Korea at the 2006 World Junior Badminton Championships and has just returned from a trip that took him to tournaments in Scotland, Ireland, Wales and Malaysia.
BALL HOCKEY — Tammy Coté: Tammy plays for the Ottawa Thunder of the Ottawa Women’s League. Tammy played in the National Championships where she won a gold medal and led the team in scoring. For her efforts here, she was selected to the 2006 National All -star Team. Tammy also played in the 2006 World Cup in Slovakia in May winning a Silver medal. Recognized in her sport as an outstanding athlete and dedicated player, she has been selected to play on the first ever Women’s Team Canada Team which will play in Ratingen, Germany in June of 2007.
BASEBALL — Mike Kusiewicz: Mike Kusiewicz is a veteran of the Canadian National Baseball Team, having appeared at the 2004 Athens Olympics. This year, Mike, a left -handed pitcher, played at many levels. He went 4-0 with the Kanata Selects, then played for Edmonton in the Northern League, going 3-1. Joining the National Team again, he helped Canada advance to the second round of the Olympic Qualifiers in Cuba. Mike finished off his year pitching the University of Ottawa Baseball Team to the CIS Final Four.
BASKETBALL — Osvaldo Jeanty: Osvaldo has done it all in 2006. He led his team to the CIS National title picking up many individual honours along the way. These included being selected: to the First Team All-Canadian Men’s Basketball Team, The OUA Men’s Basketball Player of the Year, The CIS Men’s Basketball Championship Game MVP, The CIS Men’s Basketball Championship Tournament MVP, The CIS Men’s Basketball Player of the Year and the CIS Male Athlete of the Year. He has been a key member of Carleton’s 4 straight national championships and is a repeat winner of this award from 2005.
BIATHLON — Alicia Hurley: Alicia started off her season with a bronze medal win in the Junior women’s sprint and individual competitions at a NorAm competition in Canmore, Alberta. She won another bronze medal in the youth women’s individual race at the Western Canadian Championships and has been a consistent performer on the Calforex Cup Circuit. She is currently ranked 2nd in the Junior Women’s class and 8th in the Senior Women’s division in Canada. She will represent Ontario at the upcoming Winter Canada Games.
BOWLING — (10 PIN) — Ron Allenby: Ron has been bowling tenpin for 43 years and has been a National Team member on four occasions. He bowls out of McArthur Lanes and his 226 average in 2006 was the highest sanctioned average in the Ottawa area. He bowled a career high three game series of 792 and bowled 125 pins over his average. He has had 4 perfect games of 300 and is a consistent winner in most Capital District Tenpin Bowling Association tournaments that he enters.
BOWLING — (5 PIN) — Stephane Lapensee: Stephane had an excellent year in 2006 placing 5th at the Ontario Open Finals in Hamilton. He won the TSN Provincial Qualifier with a 279 average and finished second at the Canadian Championships. Stephane also won the Sherwood Challenge and had a first and second place finish in two events on the Ottawa Majors Tour.
BOXING — Jill Perry: Jill is a 10 year member of the Beaver Boxing Club and won the 126 lb class at the 2006 Canadian Championships. She has recorded 38 wins in the ring and is a volunteer leader of the Beaver Club’s boxing classes. When not active at the gym, she is a marketing manager for a hi-tech company. She is a repeat winner from 2004 and 2005.
BROOMBALL — Mario Quenneville: Mario plays for the Ottawa Nationals Broomball team. His scoring ability and his leadership capabilities contributed to him being selected to the all-star team and best defenseman at the 2006 World Broomball Championships. He has won two gold medals, one silver and one bronze at the last four World Championships. Mario has also won 12 other medals at the national and provincial levels making him a dominating player in his sport.
CANOE/KAYAK SPRINT — Angus Mortimer: This 21 year old is a member of the Canadian Kayaking Team who trains out of the Rideau canoe Club on Mooney’s Bay. This past season, Angus went on a five month win streak in the kayak singles 500 metre race, during which he achieved a Canadian record time on route to winning the National Championships in Regina. He also won the Pan-American Canoe Championships in Mexico City. Angus raced in Team Canada’s four man kayak at the World Championships in Hungary where the crew finished 13th. He is a repeat winner from 2005.
CANOE/KAYAK WHITEWATER — Adam Cutts & Jamie Cuts: These Ottawa brothers are members of Canada’s Senior National Development Team. They placed 3rd in canoe tandem at the 2006 Pan-Am Senior Whitewater Championships and 12th in an international competition in Bratislava. Adam attends high school and Jamie is a physics major at the University of Ottawa.
CRICKET — Akber Hussain: Akber plays with the Canterbury Cricket Club and is the team captain. He is a very good all-rounder (Batting and Bowling). He was selected to play for Team Ontario where he made the years highest run total of 85 against the Toronto Team. Akber is also the Vice-Captain of the Ottawa Valley Cricket Council.
CROSS COUNTRY SKIING — Kate Brennan: Kate is a member ofthe Kanata Racers and competed at the 2006 World Junior Cross Country Ski Championships in Slovenia. She won two individual medals at the Canadian National Cross Country Championships in Thunder Bay. She attends Lakehead University and is part of the National Team Development Centre.
CURLING — Jean- Michel Ménard: Jean- Michel curls out of the Rideau and Ottawa Curling Clubs. He is the skip of the current Canadian Men’s Championship team. At the Briar in 2006, he finished second with an 8-3 record. He won his semi-final game defeating the Nova Scotia team and then went on to win the Canadian title by beating Ontario’s Glenn Howard. This title was the first ever by francophone team. At the World Championships held in Lowell, Mass., Jean- Michel and his team won the silver medal losing in the championship game to Scotland.
CYCLING — Aaron Fillion: Aaron is a member of the Ottawa Bicycle Club Racing Team. Competing in both road and cyclocross racing, he won 7 medals including a win in the elite division at the club’s Almonte to Roubaix race. He also won silver medals in the Capital City Criterium, the Ontario cyclocross championships and then won bronze in the Ontario Road Race Championships.
DIVING — Brennan Villemaire: This 14 year diver dives for the Nepean Ottawa Diving Club. Competing in all 3 dives, the 1 metre, 3 metre and platform, Brennan won 13 firsts between Feb and June in 2006. These included 3 gold medals at the Ontario Winter Games and 3 more golds at the Ontario Provincial Championships. At the Camo International Invitational featuring an international field, he collected 2 seconds and a third. Brennan is the son of Kathleen Murphy, winner of the 1976 ACT Award for Gymnastics. He is a repeat winner in diving from last year.
EQUESTRIAN — Kelley Small: In 2006, Kelley had many top ten Grand Prix results including her first Grand Prix victory at the Kentucky Spring Classic, a second and 4th place finish in two world Cup Qualifiers and a fifth place finish at both the U.S. Grand Prix League Final and the Canadian Show Jumping Championships. Kelley was named to “Team Molson”, a program for aspiring world class show jumping athletes and will earn a spot on the 2007 Canadian Equestrian Team.
FENCING — Kyle Girard: Kyle has been fencing for 15 years and trains with the Carleton University Fencing Club. He finished 2nd at the 2006 Commonwealth Championships in Belfast, Ireland and 3rd at the National Championships in Vancouver. He is also an assistant coach of the Carleton University Men’s and Women’s Varsity Fencing Team.
FIELD HOCKEY — Malinda Hapuarachchi: This University of Toronto student won the Gail Wilson Award as the top all-around Women’s Field Hockey Player in Canadian Interuniversity Sport. She also was a first team All- Canadian and played a key role in the University of Toronto winning a bronze medal at the CIS.
FIGURE SKATING — Allie Hann-McCurdy: Allie is a member of the Gloucester Skating Club but trains in British Columbia at the Centre of Excellence. Allie and her partner, Michael Coreno, won the gold medal at the Canadian figure skating championships in the junior ice dance competition. They then placed 8 in the International Skating Union’s World Junior Championships. Moving up into senior competition, Allie and her partner finished 7th at the Nebelhorn Trophy event and represented Canada in two ISU Grand Prix events.
FOOTBALL — Naim El-Far: This native of Amman, Jordan became the Gee -Gee in history to win the Russ Jackson Award honouring the CIS student-athlete who best combines football, academics and community involvement. This six-foot-two, 295 pound offensive guard currently finishing his second year in his PhD degree was named a CIS Academic All-Canadian and captured the University of Ottawa’s President Award. His community service has him working at the Shepherd’s of Good Hope, Athletes in Action and The Canadian Liver Foundation.
FREESTYLE SKIING — Jeff Bean: Jeff was our male athlete of the year in 2005. He finished 17th in aerials at the 2006 Turin Winter Olympics and is ranked 9 in the world in 2006. This, his 11th year on the World Cup circuit saw him finish 2 at Lake Placid and Mont-Gabriel and 3rd in a competition in China. This medal was his 15 career World Cup medal. In the 2006 Canadian Championships held at Apex, Jeff finished 2nd
GAELIC FOOTBALL — Kate Dean: This grade 11 student at St. Joseph Catholic High School has been playing Gaelic Football for 5 years. She served as the captain of the U16 team that played in the Continental Youth Championships held in Boston. In 2006, she played with the Ottawa Gaels in New York City, San Francisco, Boston, Montreal and Toronto. Kate, a good all-round athlete, also plays club soccer and basketball in Barrhaven.
GOLF — Allen McGee: Allen has had a great season finishing as a top contender in every OVGA event he entered. Playing with a partner, he won the OVGA 4 Ball Championships and the Ottawa Sun Scramble. Playing solo, he won the prestigious Whig- Standard in Kingston and the Canadian Volvo Challenge. In Oct. he traveled to Spain where he won the Volvo Masters World Amateur. This Tournament involves over 76000 players from 20 countries and Allen is the 1st Canadian to ever win this championship.
GYMNASTICS — (ARTISTIC) – Amy White: This 17 year old student at Lisgar is a member of the Ottawa Gymnastics Centre. In the 2005-06 season, she was the Eastern Canadian Champion in the Level 4 provincial program. She won a gold medal on the Beam, Floor Exercise, Bars and placed 4h in the Vault. This performance won her the Allround title in Level 4 and helped her anchor the Ontario Team to a gold medal finish.
HOCKEY — Michael Blunden: While playing as a member of the Erie Otters of the Ontario Major Junior Hockey League, he was selected their MVP, Player of the Year, and was the team’s leading scorer. He was invited to the try-out camp for Canada’s World Junior Team. While playing for Canada, Michael scored 2 goals and had 3 assists in 6 games. These 2 goals were scored in the championship game and helped Canada win the Gold Medal. Michael was drafted by the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2nd round and played his first game in the NHL on Oct. 29 2006.
JUDO — Francoise Nguele: Francoise trains at the Takahashi Dojo and has been Ontario’s top female competitor for the last 4 years. In 2006, she successfully defended her Senior National Championship and won a bronze medal at U.S. International Open Championships in Miami. Francoise, fighting in the 57kg class, had a 4th place finish at the Rendez-vous International Tournament held in Montreal. She is a repeat winner from 2005.
LACROSSE — Simon Robillard: Simon was born and raised in Ottawa and has just finished playing 5 years of Junior Lacrosse having played with the Gloucester Griffins and more recently with the Ottawa Titans Junior ‘A’ Lacrosse Club. While playing as captain of the Titans, Simon scored 22 goals and added 34 assists in 25 regular season games thus earning him MVP honours for the regular season. He also led his team in play-off scoring. He is the first Ottawa Titan graduate to be offered a professional contract in the National Lacrosse League signing a contract with the Portland LumberJax.
MODERN PENTATHLON — Elena Bales: In 2006, Elena, a junior, broke into the senior ranks with a 4th place finish in the three person women’s relay at the World Pentathlon Championships in Guatemala. This was the best-ever performance by a Canadian team in international modern pentathlon competition. Elena also finished sixth in the senior women’s individual event at the African Open Championships and 21st in a World Cup Event in Italy. She is a repeat winner from 2004 and 2005.
ORIENTEERING — Robbie Anderson: Robbie is an 18 year old freshman engineer at Carleton University and an 8 year member of the Ottawa Orienteering Club. He won the middle distance (4km) and the long distance (8km) for Junior Men at the Canadian Championships near Orangeville, Ontario. Next, he won the middle distance at the North American Championships held near Hamilton, Ontario. Robbie will represent Canada at the World Junior Championships to be held in Australia this summer.
PARALYMPIC — Jason Dunkerley: Jason is a member of the Ottawa Lions Track Club who made a comeback from a serious leg injury to compete again at an International level. In 2006, at the International Paralympic Committee Championships held in the Netherlands, Jason, guided by his guide runner (Greg Bailey) won both the 800m and 1500m races. Jason is a repeat winner from last year in his sport and was our male athlete of the year in 2004.
RINGETTE — Patricia Burke: Patricia Burke has been involved with ringette for most of her life. She not only plays the game, she works as an executive with the Nepean Ringette Association, she coaches and she referees. She is a breast cancer survivor who along with some friends in 2005-06 organized the “Chicks with Sticks- Skate for the Cure” Ringette Tournament to raise money for breast cancer. To date, this all-night tournament has raised almost $30,000.
ROWING — Caitlin Renneson: This University of Ottawa student began rowing in 2005 and competes in the Mixed Double races. In 2006, she finished 1st at the Ontario Rowing Championships and at the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta. Caitlin topped off her season with a bronze medal performance at the FISA World Rowing Championships held in England. She was awarded the Female Adaptive Athlete of the Year Award by Rowing Canada.
RUGBY — Stuart Ault: He is a long-time member of the Barrhaven Scottish Rugby Club. In 2006, he was selected to play for Canada East against talented players from the U.S. and Canada, where he lead the tournament in scoring. He then joined the National Senior Men’s High Performance Team, was carded by Sport Canada, and competed against Wales, Italy, Dubai and South Africa. In 2006, Stu had a break-through year, gaining recognition on the national and international level.
SAILING — Johan Koppernas: John is the skipper of the winning crew that successfully defended the title that he won at the 2005 World Shark championships. This Kanata resident sailed against a field of 51 boats, beating them all to win consecutive championships. He also took a rookie crew to the 10 country Dennis Conner Regatta in New York City and placed 6 out of 15 crews. He is a repeat winner from 2005.
SAILING — (ABLE SAIL) — Katie Paialunga: Katie has been sailing for two seasons. In 2006, she finished second in the Mobility Cup held in Vancouver, sailing against athletes from the US and Australia. Katie added two more seconds in races held in Kingston, Ontario and Pointe Claire, Quebec. She sails in the Silver Fleet classification.
SHOOTING — (PISTOL) — Yuri Movshovich – Yuri is a member of the RA Gun Club. He finished third in each of the three Olympic events at the National Championships. At the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, Australia, he won a bronze medal in both the Free Pistol Badge Match and the pairs Rapid Fire Pistol event. He is a repeat winner from 2005.
SHOOTING — (AIR RIFLE) — Asmir Arifovic: Asmir competed at the National Championships in Air Rifle and Free Rifle qualifying for the National Team. He traveled to Munich to compete in the World Cup and then to the USA for the World Championships Trials thereby qualifying for the World Championships. His 2006 performances have qualified him for the 2007 National Team. He is a repeat winner from 2005 in this sport.
SLEDGE HOCKEY — Todd Nicholson: Todd is an extremely talented sledge hockey player who can play any position. He has been a National Team member since 1991 and is ranked among the top six sledge hockey players in the world. Todd has won two medals at the Paralympic Games and four more at World Championships. In 2006, he won a Gold Medal as the captain of Canada’s Men’s Sledge Hockey Team at the Winter Paralympic Games. Todd is much admired as his courage and perseverance are a positive example for many young athletes.
SOCCER — Eilish McConville: She was the most dominant player in Canadian University Women’s soccer winning the Tissot Player of the Year Award. This first team All-Canadian led the nation in scoring with 22 goals in 16 games and led her Queen’s Golden Gaels to the OUA East Championships and a silver medal in Victoria at the CIS championships. She has scored 55 goals in 46 regular games over a 4 year career at Queens and was the only player from her team named to the All-Canadian team.
SOFTBALL — Matthew Bowman: This member of the Orleans Rebels Softball team has been playing for 11 years and plays catcher or first base. He has been knocking on the door in his efforts to make Team Ontario and Ontario’s Canada Games Team. In 2006, his team won a silver medal in the Ontario playdowns and qualified to go to Nationals in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, were they finished 5th. Matthew was selected the All-star catcher, the only player from Ontario to make this team. He hit 6 home runs and had a 550 batting average in this tournament.
SNOWBOARDING — Crispin Lipscomb: Crispin was a member of Canada’s 2006 Winter Olympic Team competing in the Halfpipe event. He now trains out of Whistler and spends his summers coaching snowboarding in New Zealand. For the second successive, Crispin was crowned National Champion and earned seven top-ten finishes in World Cup competitions. He is a repeat winner from 2005.
SPECIAL OLYMPICS — Christina Campbell: In 2006, this 19 year old member of the Ottawa Rhythmic Gymnastics Club won 5 gold medals at the Special Olympics Provincial Summer Games and 5 more gold medals at the Special Olympics National Summer Games in Brandon, Manitoba. In October of 2007, Christina will represent Canada at the Special Olympics World Summer Games in Shanghai, China. She recently received the Female Athlete Achievement Award in the Ottawa District of Special Olympics Ontario. Christina is a student at Algonquin College.
SPEEDSKATING LONG TRACK — Kristina Groves: This repeat winner from 2005 had a great performance at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy. She had 5 top 8 finishes winning a silver medal in the 1500m, another silver in the Team Pursuit, a 5th in the 1000m, a 6th in the 5000m and an 8th in the 3000 metres. She was a member of the 3 skater team that set a World record in the Team Pursuit race. She followed up her Olympic success with another strong performance at the World Championships finishing 2nd in the 500m, 3rd in the 1500m, 3rd in the 3000m and 4th in the 5000m. Kristina is currently ranked #3 in the World in the World Long Track Speed Skating Ratings.
SPEEDSKATING SHORT TRACK — Ivanie Blondin: Ivanie is the youngest person to make Canada’s World Junior Speedskating team that traveled to Serbia for the 2006 championships. Here, she won a bronze medal as part of the 2000m relay team. Widely regarded as one of the top up-and-coming young female short track stars, Ivanie is one of five elite athletes whose picture appears on the Quest for Gold Lottery Tickets. At the National Team Trials, she won the 1500m and finished 2nd overall. Her dream is to be in Vancouver in 2010.
SQUASH — Samantha Cornett: This member of the Queensview Goodlife Squash Club finished second in both the Open and Closed Under 17 Canadian Championships. At the Senior Women’s Canadian Closed Squash Championships she finished 11th losing in the first round but then winning two matches in the silver consolation round. Samantha has been named to Squash Canada’s high performance junior women’s team and is a repeat winner in her sport from 2005.
SWIMMING — Emily Wong: Emily is a member of the Nepean Kanata Barracuda Swim Club and the Canadian Junior National Team. Competing for Canada at the Victoria State Championships in Australia, she won a gold, silver and bronze medal. In 2006, she broke a provincial short course record in the 100m freestyle and won a silver and bronze medal at the Eastern Canadian Championships. She is now attending Northwestern University on a full scholarship.
SYNCHRONIZED SWIMMING — Carlie Cholette: Carlie is a member of the Gloucester Synchro Club and competed at the 2006 Synchronized Swimming Provincial Tier Championships where she won the Tier 3 figure event. She had an undefeated season in figure event competitions. She joined her teammates and helped them earn a silver medal in the team routine event. She is now training at the national level.
TABLE TENNIS — Mo Zhang: This seventeen year old B.C. native now lives and trains in Ottawa at the National Training Centre. She is the number one ranked female in Canada and in the Under 18 Girls category, she is ranked 19th in the World. Mo has been the Women’s Canadian Singles Champion for the last three years and has excelled on the International Tour as well winning the Finlandia Open in Helsinki, the U.S. Open, the Portugal Junior Open and the El Salvador Junior Open. She won four international titles in 2006.
TAEKWONDO — Kathleen Crichley: This 17 year old Franco Cité high school student competes for the Tae E Lee Taekwondo School. Kathleen won first place in the Tae E Lee Cup Taekwondo Championships and followed this up with a strong bronze medal performance at the Ontario Provincial Championships. She has qualified for the Pan Am Games Trials to be held in 2007. She is a repeat winner from 2005.
TENNIS — Laura Pola: This young tennis player has dominated the tennis scene in 2006. She won the Ontario Open Singles Championships and then won the Under 16 and Under 18 Outdoor Canadian Singles National Championships. Playing indoors with a partner, Laura won the Canadian National Doubles Championships in the Under 16 age class. She also was a finalist in the Under 18 Outdoor Doubles Canadian National Championships. She is certainly a rising star on the national tennis circuit.
TRAMPOLINE — Cedric Belisle: Cedric is a member of the Spring Action Trampoline Club. He placed 11th in Trampoline and 5th in Double Mini-Trampoline at the Indo-Pacific Championships held in South Africa. At the recent Canadian team trials, Cedric placed 7th in the Youth Category for Trampoline and in Double Mini-Trampoline.
TRIATHLON — Rick Hellard: This 40 year triathlete has done well in competitions competing against athletes of all ages. He placed 15th overall in a field of approximately 600 runners in the Muskoka Long Course and then won the Kingston Triathlon over a strong group of athletes. Rick also won the Brockville race and followed this up with a winning sub 9 hour performance (8:41) in the Montreal Esprit, his first time to be under 9 hours. Rick won the Long Distance Pro Award from the Ontario Association of Triathletes last October.
VOLLEYBALL — Ryan DeBruyn: This 6-foot-6 middle/opposite hitter is now playing for the University of Winnipeg Wesmen. He was the CIS Rookie of the year in 2006. He finished his freshman year ranked in Canada West with a .416 hitting percentage. To complement his indoor season, he combined with his beachball partner to place 25th at the U21 Men’s World Beach Championships in Poland. Ryan is a repeat winner from 2004.
VOLLEYBALL (BEACH) — Kate Eckhardt: Kate, with her partner won silver medals at both the Provincial and National U18 Beach Championships. She then placed 17th at the U19 World Beach Championships held in Bermuda in September of 2006. Kate has been a previous winner at our Awards having won volleyball awards in 2004 and 2005.
WATER POLO — Alex Moggridge: Alex is a top performing athlete who plays for the Titans Water Polo Team. In the summer of 2006, he played for Canada on the Canadian Youth National Team in the Hawaii Invitational Tournament. He has since been selected to join the Junior Men’s National team and is now a carded athlete in the national team program of the Canadian Water Polo Association.
WATER SKIING — Chantal Fowler: Chantal is a natural athlete who brought her experiences in sports like downhill skiing and elite wheelchair racing to her new sport of adaptive waterskiing. She began competing in 2006 and after only a few months of training, Chantal won the Canadian National Adaptive Water Ski Championships in both slalom and tricks. In the 2006 Pan-Am Water Ski Championships, she won two silver medals in slalom and tricks which is the best ever international result for a Canadian woman to date.
WRESTLING — Miles Cundell: He is wrestling in his fourth year in the 77 kilos class with the National Capital Wrestling Club and has a record of 39 wins against 1 loss. Miles attends South Carleton High School and is the only local wrestler to win a gold medal at the OFSAA Wrestling Championships.

Special Achievement Award: In 2007, Bob Kay, an Ottawa paddler, will have competed in 50 consecutive Canadian Canoe Championship regattas. In 1958, at age 16 with the Cartierville Boating Club Montreal, he began his streak winning gold in Juvenile War Canoe. He then continued his winning ways recording 31 gold medals in junior and senior events at Canadian Championships and narrowly missing an Olympic berth. He also won six North American titles. Since moving to Ottawa in 1991, he has been representing the Rideau Canoe Club and won 3 gold medals at the 2005 World Masters Games in Edmonton. This year at age 65, he will race in the 1000m in C-l to celebrate his 50th consecutive year in Olympic style canoe racing. Well done Bob!
