Rachel is the skip for our Female Team of the Year, the Team Homan Ottawa Curling Club Rink, the reigning national women’s curling champions and world bronze medalists.
The 24-year-old skip made several jaw-dropping shots at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts in nearby Kingston, beating Team Jennifer Jones on two occasions to earn her young team’s first Canadian title.
This season, Rachel’s Ottawa Curling Club rink beat a world-class field at November’s Masters of Curling in Abottsford, B.C., a grand slam event, finished third at the Canadian Olympic trials, and they’re now eager to defend their Canadian title Feb. 1-9 in Montreal.
Like Rachel, Phil is the leader of our Male Team of the Year, the Carleton University Ravens Men’s Basketball Team. The dynamic guard for the Canadian university-champion Ravens won the Mike Moser Memorial Trophy as national MVP for the second year in a row in 2013, the fifth player to ever earn that honour in back-to-back years. He led Carleton in points per game during the regular season and in their three victories at the national championships. Scrubb is also a member of Canada’s national development team and placed fourth at the 2013 FISU World University Games.
Team Homan went undefeated to win the Ontario women’s curling championship, and then lost just once at the national Scotties Tournament of Hearts to win the first Canadian senior title of their career. The Ottawa Curling Club rink went on to win a bronze medal at the world championships in Latvia. Team Homan won numerous other events and finished first on the World Curling Tour’s order of merit. Team members are skip Rachel Homan, Emma Miskew, Alison Kreviazuk and Lisa Weagle, along with coach Earle Morris.
The Ravens won their ninth national title in 11 years in 2013. Their performance in front of the hometown crowd at the CIS championships was utterly dominant as they plowed over the Lakehead Thunderwolves 92-42 in the national championship match, which came on the heels of a 19-1 regular season and an Ontario title. They’ve let to lose once this season either as they gun for another national prize at Canadian Tire Centre this March.

After 8 years competing in canoe-kayak herself, Cheyanne turned to coaching and has quickly earned impressive results. She works with numerous young athletes at the Rideau Canoe who have produced top results provincially and nationally, including Megan Sibthorpe, Ottawa’s most golden athlete at the Canada Summer Games (with three canoe gold medals). Cheyanne recently accepted a position to coach in New Zealand for two months during the Canadian winter.
Glenroy is a coach for the Ottawa Lions Track-and-Field Club and also serves as manager of Athletics Canada’s National Sprints and Relay Training Centre.
As a former Olympic Gold medallist, Glenroy knows a thing or two about running relays. This past summer, 15 of his Lions relay teams won a provincial title. His senior men’s 4×100, junior women’s 4×100 and youth women’s 4×100 teams also won national relay titles.
Glenroy has also coached Canada’s national men’s 4×100 relay team for many years now, guiding them back to a place amongst the planet’s best sprint relay nations despite not having any athletes who have broken the 10-second barrier.
After their heart-breaking disqualification at the London Olympics in 2012, the Canadians earned redemption at the 2013 World Track-and-Field Championships, winning the bronze medal.
Ed Laverty, since 1963, has presided over the Ottawa Nepean Touch Football League (ONTFL), retiring in its 50th season this past year. Hundreds of teams – male, female and coed categories – play touch football all year round, in a variety of levels of play.
Ed has also been instrumental in enabling 40 years of Provincial and National Touch Championships across the country to take place, serving long periods as President of Touch Football Ontario and Touch Football Canada over that time. He has brought several Canadian touch football championships to Ottawa, with one of note being the 1996 national championship event, dubbed “Crash The Capital”, which had over 140 teams who used hundreds of hotel rooms, filling many area restaurants and pubs and bringing much revenue to our city.
Ed has introduced thousands to the sport of touch football, as the ONTFL is still very popular from kids to seniors and now second and third generations are playing. Ed was honoured at the ONTFL’s 50th anniversary this past season by being inducted to its prestigious Hall of Fame.
Hugh Conlin is in his 45th year of coaching, and when we say coaching, this is the sport of track and field, which generally knows no end to its competitive cycles – at least 11 months a year, which puts Coach Conlin’s totals around 495 months, 2,160 weeks & 10,800 practices.
As a part of those coaching years, Hugh also taught and coached for 32 years at North Dundas District High School, contributing to many Ontario high school champions and medallists.
In 1976, with inspiration offered from Canada hosting the Montreal Olympic Games, Hugh began coaching the sport at the club level in Ottawa, helping the East Ottawa Lions, the Ottawa Kinsmen Harriers and the Ottawa Athletic Club and eventually the amalgamated Ottawa Lions come 1993.
After his retirement from teaching in 1999, Hugh has been full speed ahead in the sport, working for eight years as an athlete development manager and technical manager for the Ottawa Lions, and then joining Athletics Canada as the Director of Athlete Development from 2006 to 2009.
Hugh was inducted into the Ottawa Lions Hall of Fame as a Coach in 2005, having been named as a national team coach to 13 Canadian teams. He coached eight national champions in the U20 and Open age divisions and coached 16 other athletes who made national teams.
In 2010, Hugh would take a new direction in the sport and become a full-time Lead Coach for Athletics Canada’s Paralympic program, helping para-ambulatory athletes prepare for the London 2012 Paralympic Games. Over half of the London team would be made up of athletes that came through the Ottawa Coaching Centre. Seven athletes, three guide runners and four contributing coaches were all members of the Ottawa Lions Track & Field Club and led by Hugh.
Coach Conlin is far from done in track-and-field as he turns 70 this coming March, continuing to nurture our sport’s development for both Ottawa and Canada.
John Smith has coached at the Bel-Air Copeland Lions and Norsemen Football Club for over 40 years, serving as Club President since 1991 and enabling countless youth from the Carlington area to take part in organized sport.
He is a key member of the National Capital Amateur Football Association’s Board of Directors, handling all the scheduling for the tackle program, which consists of well over 300 games for more than 60 teams, featuring 2,500 players and coaches. In 2002, John helped take on the challenge of launching NCAFA’s girls’ touch football program, which has grown to over 250 participants. The total number of volunteer hours John has put in is simply countless.
In 2011, the City of Ottawa formally recognized the valuable contributions that John has made in the community by naming the field at the Bel-Air Lions’ longtime home “John Smith Field”, recognizing his tireless efforts, while reminding future players of the importance of such dedication, commitment and service to the community.
Lee MacKay first stepped onto a wrestling mat when he accepted an invitation from his Sir Robert Borden High School football coach Ace Powell to try out for the team.
While his football experience has left him with some fond memories on the gridiron, he could only summarize his wrestling career as “very mediocre.”
But that didn’t mean he left the sport altogether. At age 18, he turned to officiating and 41 years later has become one of the most respected referees in the world of amateur wrestling.
FILA, the international federation of associated wrestling styles, was so impressed with Lee’s contribution to the sport over the past five decades that they awarded him its Golden Whistle at the 2013 world senior championships last fall. Lee is only the second Canadian to win the most prestigious officiating honour in wrestling.
When is comes to refereeing, Lee is a driving force in Canada in raising the standards of excellence, and his leadership and expertise have assisted many officials at all levels in Canada and around the world.
A teacher and phys-ed director at St. Paul Catholic High School in Ottawa, Lee became an international official in 1978 and was promoted to the Exceptionelle category in 1995. While he recently accepted a new challenge as a FILA instructor, where he will contribute to officiating development, he’ll continue to serve as one of the world’s most respected officials.
His resume is the envy of many officials as he has been a referee at all of the major international championships.
Lee has studied matches and awarded points at the past three Summer Olympics in London, Beijing and Athens. When it comes to the world senior championships, he has officiated at all the meets from 1995 to 2013.
His list of achievements also includes eight world junior and espoir championships, seven European senior championships, six Pan American championships, four world cadet championships and two Commonwealth Games. He also has refereed many major meets, including the New York Athletic Club Holiday International Open.
As co-editor of the Canadian Wrestling Rules, Lee is continually approached by national officials and coaches to provide rule interpretations.
Lee also has served as a clinician or head official at many national and international championships.
He has coached youth wrestling for 35 years as well, and often steps up to volunteer to coach high school teams in other sports to give students an opportunity to participate.
ARCHERY – ERIC PETERS: Eric’s precision shooting for a second straight year has made him the top archer in the city. The South Nation Archery Club member competed for Canada in the cadet class at the World Youth Championships held last fall in China. He finished 73rd in the recurve bow category qualifying round and lost a close opening match in the individual elimination championship. At the Canadian Championships, Eric won the cadet outdoor gold medal and was the silver medallist during the cadet indoor competition. He also was the silver medallist at the regional indoor cadet championship.
ATHLETICS – OLUWASEGUN MAKINDE: Segun was chosen as the outstanding male athlete for the 2013 season by his track club, the Ottawa Lions. He was a member of Canada’s 4x100m relay team for the IAAF World Championships, which won a bronze medal. In addition, he won two gold medals in the 200m and 4x100m relay while competing for Canada at the Jeux de la Francophonie. He added a third major international event to his season by finishing 4th in the 200m at the FISU World University Games. His time of 20.62 seconds for the 200m was a new personal best and ranks him third on the Lions’ all-time best list, just behind his coach, Glenroy Gilbert. The University of Ottawa Gee-Gees sprinter was also a bronze medallist in the 60m, a silver medallist in the 300m, and a gold medallist in the 4x200m relay at the CIS national university championships.
BADMINTON – Sergiy Shatenko: Sergiy Shatenko, 21, made some noise on the international badminton scene in 2013. The RA Badminton Club athlete was a quarter-finalist at the Ottawa Canadian International Challenge and the YONEX USA International, where he also won a silver medal in men’s doubles with fellow Ottawa native Andrew D’Souza. Sergiy, ranked in the world’s top-200, also earned a gold medal as the men’s singles representative for Canada’s gold medal-winning team at the Pan American championships in the Dominican Republic.
BALL HOCKEY – ALICIA BLOMBERG: Alicia, a member of the Nordikks team in the Ottawa Vanier Women’s Ball Hockey League, played for Canada at the World Ball Hockey Championships, helping Canada win gold. She tallied 11 points in the round robin and playoffs, earning her the award as the best forward in the tournament. She is a recent grad from the University of Ottawa, where she won the award as the Gee-Gees women’s hockey player of the year and the U of O’s Presidency Award for academic, athletic and community achievements.
BASEBALL – MATTHEW IANNI: This 6’7’’, 225-pound Grade 11 student at Mother Teresa Catholic High School has a black belt in karate and has twice been named his school football team’s top offensive lineman. However, it is when he is on the pitcher’s mound that he is at his best. Matt has been intimidating batters by throwing a 90 mile-an-hour fastball. He was a member of the Ontario team that captured the silver medal at the 2013 Canada Summer Games, which led him to be named to the Canadian junior national team. Matt, a right-handed pitcher for the Ottawa Nepean Canadians, is the fifth player from his club in the last 10 years to be named to the national junior team. No doubt he has already drawn the interest of major U.S. universities and major league teams.
BASKETBALL – PHILIP SCRUBB: This 6’3” guard on the Carleton University men’s basketball team is simply the best in Canada. Philip won his second Mike Moser Memorial Trophy in 2013, given to the top CIS men’s basketball player. He is a key member of the Ravens team that won their ninth national championship in the last 11 years, averaging 18.6 points per game, shooting 42.6% on all attempts and sinking 86% of his free-throws. Philip is a member of Canada’s development team and competed at the 2013 FISU Summer Universiade, placing 4th in the world.
BIATHLON – ALEX DUPUIS: In his first year in the youth men’s category, Alex had significant accomplishments, whether on snow or land. After winning a gold and a silver medal in two of his four Nor-Am races, he finished 2nd overall on the continental circuit. During the Canadian championships on the site of the 2010 Winter Olympics, he was part of a silver medal-winning relay team and narrowly missed medals in his three other events, placing 4th in the individual race, 5th in the sprint and 6th in the pursuit. On land, he placed 1st in the sprint and pursuit races at the North American summer biathlon championships in Jericho, VT. Alex also won multiple gold medals on the Quebec Cup circuit. Later this winter, he hopes to represent Canada at the world youth championships in Maine.
BOBSLEIGH – CODY SORENSEN: Cody continued his push towards the top of the bobsled world in 2013. The former Glebe Collegiate and Guelph University hurdler earned several solid results on the World Cup circuit and won a team bronze medal at the FIBT World Championships. At the final World Cup race of the 2012-2013 season, Cody helped Chris Spring’s sled to a 7th-place finish on the 2014 Olympic track in Sochi, including a second run that was the third-fastest time clocked. At the end of 2013, Cody placed 4th, 7th and 4th in World Cup four-man competitions to post our country’s best results and earn the title of Canada-1 for Team Spring. Cody will be shooting for the podium next at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games.
BOWLING (5-PIN) – STEPHANE LAPENSÉE: After a slow start to the Ontario 5-pin bowling championships, Stephane came alive and was the top qualifier for the step-ladder individual playoffs with four 300+ games and a 10-game pin average of 277.5. He reached the final, finishing as runner-up despite scores of 304 and 262. At the provincial team championship, Stephane and teammates Mathieu Janveau, Roy Brooks, Allen Villeneuve and D.J. Villeneuve were silver medallists. Stephane also posted Ontario’s third-best men’s average at 279, and helped the Ottawa Valley team capture the regional aggregate points title.
BOWLING (10-PIN) – ROSALIE HISCOCK: Rosalie posted a 225 average in the McArthur Doubles League and a 230 average in the Roger Sarazin Memorial League. As a result, she was awarded the Ontario women’s high average title. Still looking for her first perfect 300 game, she rolled a 283 and had a 784 three-game series last season. A past America zone youth double bronze medallist, Rosalie won the city’s women’s high average and scratch series awards from the Capital District Tenpin Bowling Association in 2013.
BOXING – KAITLYN CLARK: A member of the Beaver Boxing Club, Kaitlyn won the women’s 69kg division silver medal at the 2013 Canadian Amateur Boxing Champion-ships in Regina, Sask. The Carleton University finance and French student began boxing three years ago and during that time has racked up gold medals at the Brampton Cup, the Ringside World Championships, and the Ontario Championships, which she won in 2013.
BROOMBALL – JOEY KEALEY: During the 2012-13 season, Joey was a member of the world-champion Ottawa Nationals and won both provincial and national titles with his other team, the U19 Valley Gamblers. At the U19 provincial championships, Joey led his team in scoring and was selected an all-star. Following this up at the nationals, he continued his great play, earning the overall tournament MVP honour. Joey continues to play in the Ottawa Municipal and Pakenham Broomball leagues and is among the leading scorers in both.
CANOE/KAYAK (SPRINT) – MADELINE SCHMIDT: At age 10, Maddy began paddling at the Ottawa River Canoe Club and four years later joined the Rideau Canoe Club. Maddy enjoyed a highly decorated season at age 18. Maddy won a bronze medal for Canada in the K-1 200m race at the Junior World Championships, held in Welland, Ont. At the Canadian Championships in Montreal, Maddy won five gold medals, which added to her haul of one gold and four silver medals from the Canada Summer Games. On the international stage, the university-bound Woodroffe High School student won three more gold medals at the Pan Am championships in Puerto Rico, which matched her victory in the K-2 1000m at an international regatta in Slovakia.
CANOE/KAYAK (WHITEWATER) – CAMERON SMEDLEY: An engineering student at Carleton University, Cameron was the 2013 Canadian champion in C-1 slalom. A six-year member of Canada’s national team, Cameron finished 12th at the U23 World Championships in Slovakia. The 24-year-old Ottawa River Runners athlete also represented Canada at the senior-level Canoe Slalom World Championships, reaching the semi-final round and placing 27th overall.
CRICKET – VARUN HARISH: This tall athletic all-rounder had his best season in 2013. While batting in 17 games for the New Edinburgh Cricket Club, he scored 723 runs for an average of 42.53. He hit three centuries, 132 runs in the challenge division, 165 in the citizen division and 116 runs in the T20 division. Varun led his club in scoring in both the challenge and T20 divisions while also snaring 15 wickets as a bowler and making seven catches in the field.
CURLING – RACHEL HOMAN: Rachel, playing as the skip of her Ottawa Curling Club rink, led her team to multiple victories domestically and internationally in 2013. Homan went unbeaten at the Ontario provincial championships and lost just once at the national Scotties Tournament of Hearts, making numerous clutch shots to beat Team Jennifer Jones on two occasions and earn the young team’s first Canadian title. Representing Canada at the 2013 World Championships, Homan won a bronze medal. Team Homan also beat a world-class field at November’s Masters of Curling in Abottsford, B.C., a grand slam event, and were first on the World Curling Tour’s order of merit. The 24-year-old finished 3rd at the Roar of the Rings Olympic Trials and will now shoot to defend her Scotties title in Montreal.
CYCLING – ARIANE BONHOMME: Ariane is the Canadian junior record holder in the individual pursuit race. In 2013, the Ottawa Bicycle Club athlete finished 3rd at the national time trial and was a member of the Canadian cycling team that won the team pursuit race at the Junior Pan American Championships, setting a new world record. Ariane also represented Canada at the world junior track cycling championships, placing 14th in the points race and 21st in individual pursuit.
DIVING – HENRY McKAY: Henry recovered from a broken foot in time to have a terrific 2013 season. He medaled in every event he competed in at the Speedo Junior Development National Championships in Saskatoon and the Pan American Junior Diving Championships in Tucson, AZ. At the jr. nationals, the St. Joseph Catholic High School honour roll student won gold in the 1m springboard, silver in the 3m and a bronze in the platform events, and was the high point performer in his age class. The Nepean-Ottawa Diving Club and third-year junior national team member brought home a gold medal for Canada in the 3m event and a bronze in the 1m at the Pan Am juniors.
FENCING – KELLEIGH RYAN: Kelleigh is a member of Canada’s women’s foil fencing team. The team had a breakthrough season in 2013, earning a silver medal at the Pan Am Championships and a best-ever two top-8 finishes on the tough World Cup circuit. The team had another best-ever performance by finishing 7th at the World Championships. Kelleigh is the leader and the anchor of this team, now ranked 9th in the world.
FIELD HOCKEY – PARDEEP KOONAR: Pardeep, a goaltender, has played for Ontario in numerous Canadian national championships and has represented Canada several times internationally as well. He plays his hockey for both the Gloucester and Toronto Titans field hockey clubs. He was named the MVP at the Big Apple Tournament and best goaltender at three other competitions. He will play for Canada at the 2014 Pan American Cup in Uruguay, where Canada hopes to qualify for the 2015 Indoor World Cup to be held in Germany.
FIGURE SKATING – ALAINE CHARTRAND: This Nepean Skating Club athlete won her first women’s senior medal at the 2013 Canadian Tire National Figure Skating Championships, when she finished third in the freeskate final and captured the overall bronze medal. That result earned her a berth on Skate Canada’s national figure skating team and a significant high-performance development grant. After an eighth-place finish at the World Junior Figure Skating Championships, Alaine was 4th and 7th in a pair of ISU Junior Grand Prix events. She finished 5th at December’s Skate Canada Challenge and recently recorded the same placing at the 2014 nationals here in Ottawa.
FOOTBALL – ETTORE LATTANZIO: Ettore is a 6’, 230-lb. defensive lineman for the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees. In 2013, Ettore topped Ontario in quarterback sacks with 10, tied for the best in the CIS. He was selected as Ontario University Athletics’ outstanding lineman, and was both a provincial and national all-star.
FOOTBALL (AUSSIE RULES) – NATHAN STROM: Nathan had an unmatched rookie season playing with the Ottawa Swans Australian Football Club, winning the club’s top honour for best and fairest player. A former soccer player, Nathan learned quickly and was named to Canada’s national team, Northwind. He played for Canada against the U.S. and travelled to Australia for the International Cup.
FOOTBALL (TOUCH) – MITCH DUGGAN: Mitch was selected the MVP in the Ottawa Nepean Touch Football League’s elite division. Mitch played both offence and defence for the provincial-champion Ottawa Seminoles, leading the ONFTL in scoring with 117 points, and adding five interceptions. Season highlights included 20 receptions of more than 40 yards and a 105-yard interception return for a touchdown in the Ontario championship game.Mitch was selected MVP of the tournament.
GOLF – GRACE ST-GERMAIN: This young golfer is a resident of Orleans and plays as a member of the Hylands Golf Club. In 2013, the 15-year-old won the Golf Association of Ontario’s girls’ match play championships as well as the GAO’s under-17 juvenile girls’ championships in Renfrew. Grace was the champion at the Graham Cooke Junior Invitational, winning by eight strokes over the rest of the field and finishing as the only golfer under par for the two-day event. Grace also finished tied for 6th at the CN Future Links Prairie Championships in Winnipeg and 4th at the Canadian Junior Golf Association’s national junior championship. A Grade 10 student at St. Peter Catholic High School, Grace is now a member of Team Ontario.
GYMNASTICS (ARTISTIC) – SAMUEL ZAKUTNEY: Competing in front of a noisy hometown crowd, Samuel successfully defended his boys’ high-performance tyro title during the Canadian Artistic Gymnastics Championships at Carleton University. The two-day aggregate competition saw him win the preliminary round and place 3rd in the optionals for a narrow six-tenths-of-a-point victory. A member of the National Capital Boys Competitive Gymnastics Academy, Samuel’s season also included a return to the national age-group team, an all-around victory in the Elite Canada competition, and a 15th-place finish for Canada at a FIG International Junior Team Cup meet in Berlin.
GYMNASTICS (RHYTHMIC) – LUCINDA NOWELL: Lucinda enjoyed a breakthrough season in her sport as she split time between her home Kanata Rhythmic Gymnastics Club and the Rythmik Quebec Club in 2013, travelling multiple times per week to Montreal for training. She won the overall silver medal at the Eastern Regional Championships with a 1st in ribbon, a 3rd in ball and hoop and a 4th in clubs. Ottawa’s only national-level rhythmic gymnast then went on to place 4th overall in the Senior National category at the Canadian Gymnastics Championships in Ottawa, winning a silver medal in the clubs event. In June, the 16-year-old tried out and was selected to the Canadian senior group team, training in Toronto as a carded athlete in rhythmic gymnastics, with the goal of competing in the group event for Canada in the World Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships in 2014.
HOCKEY – NICK BAPTISTE: Nick has developed into one of Canada’s promising young teenage hockey players. He was a key member of Canada’s gold medal-winning team at the 2013 Under-18 World Championships, recording three goals and five assists at the event. A powerful skater, the Buffalo Sabres made him a third-round choice in the 2013 National Hockey League draft. This season, the Sudbury Wolves forward is among the Ontario Hockey League’s top-25 scorers, having reached 20 goals and 22 assists in his first 33 games.
HOCKEY (SLEDGE) – BEN DELANEY: Ben, now 17, had played “stand-up hockey” for six years before losing his leg to cancer in 2010. Ben started playing sledge hockey in 2010 and by 2012 he was playing for Team Ontario. In 2013, he made his international debut, scoring in his Team Canada debut and winning a gold medal at the Four Nations Cup in Sochi, Russia, the test event for the 2014 Paralympic Games. Ben also won gold at Hockey Canada’s World Sledge Hockey Challenge in December.
JUDO – ZACHARIE CHENG-BOIVIN: Selected by Judo Canada as the most outstanding U15 age group athlete in the country, Zacharie is the current Pan American and Canadian champion in his weight class. Besides being Canada’s first-ever Pan Am U15 champion, he is also ranked #1 in his age class and two other age classes and one weight class above his own, an extremely rare occurrence.
LACROSSE – AARON FORSTER: This John McCrae Secondary School student captained his school team to the ‘A/AA’ field lacrosse city championship. He has been a member of Team Ontario lacrosse squads for the past two years, playing both box and field lacrosse, and winning gold medals at both sports’ national championships. Aaron was a first-team all-star at the U19 National Field Lacrosse Championships, and is always a leading scorer for his Nepean Knights Jr. ‘B’ box lacrosse team and his Ottawa Nemesis field hockey team. A certified box and field lacrosse referee, Aaron also gives back to his sport by volunteering at the club level, coaching and running programs for the new players.
LAWN BOWLING – DAVID JEFFERIES: Whether as an individual or a team member, David was very successful on the Ottawa and Ontario lawn bowling scene last summer. He represented District 16 at the provincial men’s singles championship and won four of his six matches to reach the final, earning the silver medal. Playing with teammates Grant Fletcher and Malcolm Rose, David was the vice for his bronze medal-winning District 16 team at the Ontario men’s triples championship. During the Governor General’s championship matches between Ontario and Quebec, David skipped his Ontario four-man team to victory.
MODERN PENTATHLON – MELANIE McCANN: Active in her sport for 10 years, Melanie has emerged as an international modern pentathlon power at age 24. In 2013, she successfully defended her Canadian title for the fourth consecutive year in this five-sport, single-day competition that features fencing, swimming, equestrian, shooting and running. Melanie won a North American Championships gold medal, a bronze at the Pan Ams and placed 5th at the Champions of Champions event in Qatar. Melanie, who also won two silver medals on the Canada Cup fencing circuit, competed in numerous World Cup events and the World Championships.
ORIENTEERING – EMILY KEMP: In her first year competing as a senior elite athlete, Emily, 21, enjoyed impressive results at the Orienteering World Championships in Finland, placing 25th in the long distance race, 26th in the middle distance race and 20th while anchoring the Canadian team in the relay race. The Ottawa Orienteering Club member also added a 21st-place showing after five days of competition in the Swedish O-ringen, the world’s largest orienteering event. Emily, a repeat winner of our orienteering award, currently studies in France and trains with the French national team.
PARASPORT – CURTIS THOM: Curtis, a member of the Ottawa Lions Track and Field Club, was selected the most outstanding para-athlete by his club. He is the national champion in the T54 class in the 100m, 200m and 400m. Curtis was a member of the Canadian 4x400m relay team that won a gold medal at the IPC World Athletics Championships, setting a new championship record. At the same meet, he finished 6th in the 400m and 7th in the 200m. Curtis also competed at the Jeux de la Francophonie, winning a bronze medal in the T54 400m.
RINGETTE – SARAH-LYNNE BEGIN: While playing at the 2013 Canadian Ringette Championships, Sarah-Lynne was the Nepean Ravens’ co-leading scorer with 21 total points, including a tournament-best 16 goals. Sarah-Lynne scored four goals in the second half of the national final, including the winner with 1:14 left, to overcome a 3-1 deficit and lift Nepean to a 5-4 triumph over a team from Winnipeg. Also Ontario champions, Sarah-Lynne and the Ravens represented Canada at the 2013 U19 World Championships in North Bay, dropping a close 6-4 contest to the all-star Finnish team to take the silver medal.
ROWING – SARAH BLACK & CRISTY NURSE: It is impossible to pick between these two great rowers as they are teammates in the same boats and share in the crew’s success together. Both Cristy and Sarah are members of the Ottawa Rowing Club and both helped Canada to the silver medal in the women’s four competition at the World Championships in Korea. At the same Championships, they also shared a bronze medal with the Canadian eights. This dynamic duo were also eights gold medallists the Royal Canadian Henley regatta.
RUGBY – NATASHA WATCHAM-ROY: Natasha capped off her University of Ottawa rugby career with an All-Canadian selection for her skilled play at centre. The Gee-Gees’ captain led her university team to a 5-2 record, and then represented Canada for the second time in her university career as a member of the Rugby 7s team, this time at the FISU Universiade in Kazan, Russia. Natasha scored a try in the final game, helping Canada win a bronze medal.
RUNNING (CROSS-COUNTRY) – CLAIRE SMITH: A Grade 11 student at Glebe Collegiate Institute, Claire led her school to the girls’ overall title at the OFSAA Cross-Country Running Championships with a silver medal performance in the senior girls’ race. Running in the Athletics Ontario XC Championships, she crossed the finish line first to claim the gold medal as a provincial champion. In Vancouver at the Canadian Championships, she placed a very respectable 4th as one of the younger competitors in the junior women’s race.
RUNNING (ROAD RACING) – LEAH LAROCQUE: Leah had a great season on the roads in 2013, combining her running pursuits with her studies towards a Master’s degree in journalism at Carleton University, and doing an internship with TSN in Toronto. Leah won the Canada Army Run 5k women’s race, was the top Canadian in the women’s 20-24 age class for the Ottawa Race Weekend 10k and was the top Ottawa woman in Emilie’s Run. She also found time to mentor some of her training partners while becoming very involved in the Ottawa sports media community.
SAILING – CAMERON SAWYER: Cameron lives in Westboro and is a member of Ontario’s provincial sailing team. He was Canada’s only entry in the 29er sailboat class at the Youth World Championships in Cyprus, placing 23rd. Cameron also earned a gold medal at the 29er North American Championships in Kingston.
SAILING (ABLE SAIL) – CHRISTINE LAVALLÉE: Christine won the gold medal at the Canada Summer Games in the single-handed Paralympic boat (2.4m sailing class) and followed this up three weeks later by winning the gold fleet at the 2013 Mobility Cup in Halifax. She is only the second woman to win the gold fleet in the event’s 22-year history.
SKIING (ALPINE) – CHRIS STEINKE: Chris, age 19, was recently named to the Canadian national alpine ski team as the top-ranked junior athlete in the country in slalom and downhill. In 2013, Chris was the top North American skier in the Junior World Championships slalom event. In Nor-Am Cup races, he never finished lower than 4th in the junior races. Chris was Canadian junior downhill champion and placed 8th in the super-G and downhill at the senior nationals.
SKIING (CROSS-COUNTRY) – BEN WILKINSON-ZAN: For the second consecutive year, Ben has been selected as the city’s top cross-country skiing athlete. The 19-year-old was named to the Canadian junior national team as he won five out of 13 races in the Haywood Nor-Am series, which features national and international levels of competition for racers from both Canada and the U.S. Ben, a Carleton University student who now trains out of the national team’s Thunder Bay base, also placed 3rd at the Ontario university championships.
SKIING (FREESTYLE) – MITCHELL CLARKE: A member of the Fortune freestyle team out of Camp Fortune for the past seven years, Mitchell was named to the Ontario park and pipe team based on his results from the 2013 season. Mitchell split his training and competition time between slopestyle, where he won two gold medals in competition, and halfpipe, where his best result was a 6th-place finish. He also captured a silver medal at the Ontario junior championships in slopestyle. At the Canadian Open halfpipe competition, he finished 8th. During the season-ending Canadian junior championships in Penticton, B.C., he was 6th in big air and 8th in slopestyle to finish his season 10th overall on the provincial ranking list.
SOCCER – JULIA FRANCKI: Julia was named the Ontario University Athletics eastern conference women’s soccer player of the year in 2013. The Orleans native plays for the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees team that was ranked #1 in the nation for six weeks during their season. This midfielder was selected as an All-Canadian and represented Canada at the 2013 FISU Universiade Games in Kazan, Russia.
SOFTBALL – GRACE LONERGAN: Grace has dominated the city’s top softball player award, having won it for the last three years. She continues to develop her skills as a catcher, playing with the Ottawa Valley Attack senior team that won a silver medal at the provincials. Grace, a Quest for Gold athlete in 2013, also plays for the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees women’s softball team, leading her squad in RBIs and hits en route to a silver medal at both the Ontario intercollegiate championships and the Canadian Collegiate Softball Association’s national tournament, where she was selected team MVP. For her solid effort on the diamond, Grace was also selected to the Team Ontario roster.
SNOWBOARDING – JOHN LESLIE: John, an Algonquin college student, earned a top result of 6th place and twice placed 8th on the para-snowboard World Cup circuit in 2013. At age 21, this Ottawa Akademy club athlete was the youngest competitor in each of those races. John, who lost his leg at age 11 to bone cancer, will compete for Canada at the 2014 Paralympic Games in Sochi, Russia.
SPECIAL OLYMPICS – SOPHIE ANNE LACOURSE-PUDIFIN: Sophie Anne has been training for six years at the Ottawa Rhythmic Gymnastics and SO Rhythmic Gymnastics Clubs. At the 2013 provincials, she won two gold medals and two silver medals to earn the title of 1st place overall for the Level 2 competitions. A past 3rd-place finisher at the Ontario Summer Games, Sophie Anne also competed at the USA Special Olympics, placing 1st in all four of her events. A multitalented athlete, she is also an alpine skier, a water skier and a high school cheerleader.
SPEED SKATING (LONG TRACK) – IVANIE BLONDIN: Ivanie cemented her position as Canada’s top long-distance speed skater in 2013. A former short-track competitor who has been honoured as Ottawa’s top athlete either in short-track or long-track for eight consecutive years, Ivanie won a pair of World Cup mass start silver medals last season. She also earned a World Cup gold, two silvers and a bronze with the Canadian women’s team pursuit team and placed 8th in the 5000m at the 2013 World Championships. This Gloucester Concordes skater won the 5000m and placed 2nd in the 3000m at the recent Canadian Olympic trials to book her trip to Sochi for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games alongside clubmate Vincent De Haitre, who is also set to make his Olympic debut.
SPEED SKATING (SHORT TRACK) – SAMANTHA MORRISON: Samantha continued her climb up the national short track speed skating rankings in 2013 by placing 6th at a national qualifier and 19th at the first national team selection event in Montreal. Skating out of the Calgary national training centre, this Gloucester Concordes club athlete is now Ontario’s 2nd-ranked short track speed skater, with the second half of the competitive season yet to come.
SQUASH – ALINA D’ASTI: This 18-year-old squash player from the Ottawa Athletic Club is the #1-ranked squash athlete in the Ottawa area. This season, in her last year of junior eligibility, has seen her perform well in all competitions at the regional, provincial and national championships. She finished 2nd in the under-19 girls’ class at the Fall Foliage Tournament in New Hampshire and won several matches in the GoodLife Open. Alina will be attending university starting this month with plans to continue to play squash in the Quebec university system.
SWIMMING – ADAM BEST: Adam captured three medals at the 2013 Ontario University Athletics swimming competition, including gold in the 50m backstroke. He then competed at the CIS championships, reaching three finals, including 6th-place finish in the 100m backstroke. This University of Ottawa student is now in his fifth season as a Gee-Gee and also competes for the GO Kingfish club.
TABLE TENNIS – EUGENE WANG: Canada’s top male table tennis player continues to climb in the International Table Tennis Federation rankings, and recently qualified for the season-ending World Tour Grand Finals, which features the top-16 players. While ranked 66th, his highest-ever ranking, Eugene won the U.S. Open pro tour men’s singles competition, the North American and the Canadian championships. He reached the round of 32 and round of 64 at the Kuwait City and Qatar competitions. He spends most of his time training at the new Olympic Training Centre in Saarbrücken, Germany.
TAEKWONDO – KATHERINE YEE: Katherine is the #1-ranked female fighter in the finweight class in Ontario. At the World Taekwondo Federation’s Canadian senior nationals, she won a silver medal, becoming the fifth person in Ottawa taekwondo history to ever make it to the final. She lost in this championship match to the #1-ranked person in the world. Katherine, who owns a first-degree black belt, made it to the quarter-finals in the 2013 Canada International Open and had a top-16 finish at the U.S. Taekwondo Open, the biggest tournament in the world with over 80 countries participating.
TENNIS – JIM CAMERON: When he least expected it, Jim and his partner, Keith Porter, posted five-straight victories and lost only one set to capture the International Tennis Federation men’s super seniors 60-64 age group doubles title at the World Championships. Jim also helped Canada win a bronze medal in the Von Cramm team competitions at the same event, winning three singles matches. In Canada, Jim won the men’s super seniors Canadian outdoor and Eastern Canadian indoor men’s singles and doubles championships.
TRAMPOLINE – VINCENT TYO: Vincent was the most decorated trampolinist at the Canadian Gymnastics Championships held here in Ottawa this past May. This Grade 9 Notre Dame Catholic High School won individual gold in the men’s espoir category, took silver in national-level double-mini-trampoline and earned a national synchro gold alongside his older brother Benjamin.
TRIATHLON – JOANNA BROWN: Carp native Joanna Brown enjoyed another standout year in international triathlon in 2013. Her second season competing in the U23 category, Joanna was part of an exceptionally strong Canadian team. She was the third Canadian to cross the finish line at the U23 world championships in London, England, placing 5th overall. At the World Cup in Edmonton, she finished 4th, with only Canadian teammates ahead of her. This University of Guelph varsity athlete was also a national champion with her Gryphons cross-country running team and a second-team All-Canadian in 2013. This is the fourth consecutive year that Joanna has earned this award as the city’s top triathlete.
ULTIMATE – BEN MUSSELL: After two years away from ultimate, Ben Mussell came back in a big way in 2013. Ben was a main force for the silver medal-winning Canadian team at the U23 world championships in Toronto. He was also chosen as rookie-of-the-year for his Ottawa Phoenix club team that won national silver and qualified for a worlds clubs tournament next summer. Ben also earned the distinction of being the only person to score the opening point in the world championship game and the Canadian national championship game in the same year.
VOLLEYBALL – JÉRÉMIE LORTIE: Jérémie, a fourth-year Université Laval arts and science student from Ottawa, was chosen the MVP of the CIS men’s volleyball national university championship tournament after he guided his Rouge et Or team to the gold medal. This 6-foot-7 middle was named player of the game following a 9-kill, 4.5-block performance in a four-set quarter-final win over Alberta. His continued good play helped his team to wins over Brandon University in the semi-final, and in the final game over McMaster. This put an end to an 17-year reign by Canada-West schools at the CIS championships. Jérémie also spent part of his university off-season at Volleyball Canada’s national training centre in Gatineau.
WATER POLO – JOHN CONWAY: This veteran Ottawa Titans Water Polo club member was a valuable starter on the Canadian senior men’s team, which went undefeated and won the Americas championship for the first time ever in 2013. The gold medal-winning performance qualified the Canadian team for the FINA World Aquatic Championships in Spain, where they finished 11th overall. John scored three goals in each of these major championships. The 22-year-old Ashbury College grad now trains in Calgary where the national team is located. He’s been a member of Canada’s senior national squad since 2009.
WATER SKIING – JONAH SHAFFER: This young waterskier had an exceptional 2013 season, highlighted by a bronze medal win in the slalom race at the U17 World Championships, held in the midst of Canadian winter in February on the opposite side of the world in Australia. Jonah followed this up by winning the gold medal at the prestigious Junior Masters competition last spring in Georgia. When the International Water Ski and Wakeboard Federation released its 2013 year-end rankings, Jonah’s name was at the top of the U17 men’s slalom category thanks to his results over the course of the season – one of two Canadians to achieve the #1 ranking in the world. Jonah attends Cairine Wilson Secondary School and is a contender to represent Canada at the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto.
WRESTLING – ERICA WIEBE: Erica was the 2013 Canadian champion in the women’s 72kg category and wore the maple leaf at several major international competitions in 2013. This 24-year-old from Stittsville won bronze medals at the Pan American championships and the FISU Games. Erica made her World Championship debut in Hungary, winning her first two matches against opponents from Sweden and Cuba before falling to the 2012 Olympic champion from Russia en route to a 7th-place overall. Erica represents the University of Calgary, which is now her home base for training although she says she’ll always call Ottawa home.
