Charles Slade
For a lifetime of commitment to the Rideau Canoe Club and Canoe/Kayak Canada, we are honoured to award the Mark Lowry Memorial Award for Lifetime Achievement Volunteerism or Administration to Charles Slade.
On three occasions, he has been Commodore of the Rideau Canoe Club. He has been a director for 29 years and is a life member. To list the volunteer positions Charles has held over the years is like a veritable posting of all the jobs one can imagine. At various times, Charles has been Chair, co-Chair, Chief Official, and/or Director for Canadian Canoe Championships, Pan American Canoe Championships, High-Performance Committee of Canoe/Kayak Canada, the Ottawa Dragon Boat Festival, and Canoe/Kayak for the Ontario Summer Games.
He has served as Vice-Commodore for Canoe/Kayak Canada, and currently is the Treasurer of Canoe/Kayak Canada. In his spare time, he is also the Chair of the Ontario Canoe Sprint Racing Association.
The Rideau Canoe Club has built a strong reputation for producing club and Olympic paddlers and excellent citizens. Charles Slade is a major factor in all their success.
LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD AS A SPORT TECHNICAL OFFICIAL
Elizabeth Clark
Elizabeth Clark has been called a great motivator. Skaters and coaches hold her in high regard. She is respected as a fair judge who always has the skater’s best interests at heart. Figure skating judges are all volunteers and Elizabeth Clark is one of the best.
Since 1986, Elizabeth has been the technical representative for the Minto Summer Skate Invitational Program. This event, with Elizabeth’s guidance, has brought to Ottawa such skaters as Elvis Stojko, Jennifer Robinson, Shae-Lynn Bourne and Victor Kraatz and recently Jeff Buttle, Patrick Chan and Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir. Imagine the youth members at the Minto Skating Club as they dream about following in those footsteps!
She is an ISU judge for singles, pairs and ice dance. This is the highest qualification from the International Skating Union, the world-wide body for the sport of figure skating. In recent years, Elizabeth has been assigned twice to the ISU World Figure Skating Championships, twice to the ISU Junior Worlds, and this year, to the ISU World Team Trophy. She has served for many years on judging panels at Olympic Games, World Championships, Canadian Championships and numerous international events.
The many competitions that help skaters progress from local clubs, through regionals and provincials to national and international stardom all run through key volunteers, and Elizabeth Clark has been there for almost 30 years.
MAYOR’S CUP – OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTION TO SPORT IN OTTAWA
Bruce Campbell
Bruce Campbell has always been a baseball fan, and for the last 23 years, as President of the East Nepean Little League Baseball Association, he has helped thousands of youngsters play the game at both a recreational and competitive level.
From humble beginnings in 1956, East Nepean has grown under Bruce’s watch to now include some 600 families as both boys and girls play spring ball in sanctioned Little League divisions from ages 4-5 to age 18.
On the competitive side, Bruce has watched as East Nepean has won two national titles and twice has sent representatives to World Championships, including the 2004 Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.
As President, Bruce has overseen the hosting of local, regional, provincial and national championships. Bruce has been successful in bringing the Canadian Little League Major Championships to Ottawa for the first time ever, in 2015. This national championship has been years in the making under Bruce’s tutelage, and will bring the best youth baseball in Canada to our doorstep. Bruce has been successful in attracting city and provincial funding to make this a major event for the summer of 2015.
Bruce is also responsible for the East Nepean Challenger Baseball program. Challenger baseball is for 5-18 year olds of all abilities, who have a physical or developmental challenge. This division has no restrictions, and any family in Ottawa can participate. Currently, they have around 50 participants.
With all his experience, Bruce also volunteers as a Director with Little League Ontario, Treasurer for Little League Canada, and was recently appointed to the advisory board for Little League International. He has seen a lifetime award from Little League Canada, and his lovely wife Louise has also received a lifetime award for her years alongside Bruce.
The Ottawa Sports Awards is proud to recognize Bruce Campbell for his long-time volunteerism in the community, the province, nationally and now internationally. Sport in Ottawa is better because of Bruce Campbell and he is the winner of the 2012 Mayor’s Cup.
BRIAN KILREA LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT IN COACHING AWARD
David Hart
The Geoff Gowan is presented by the Coaching Association of Canada to recognize lifetime contribution to coaching development. How fitting it is, that Ottawa’s own David Hart just received this major national award.
We are pleased to recognize David Hart for his national success, but also for his 35 years of work with water polo in Ottawa. From 2000 to 2008, David was Head Coach for the Ottawa Titans, which has grown to become one of the largest and best managed clubs in Canada. Even before that, he was co-captain of the Canadian water polo squad at the ‘76 and ‘82 Olympics, finishing ninth.
David Hart is the only coach to have worked with all six Canadian National Team programs, and has won eight international medals as a coach. He is the only Canadian to have coached a foreign water polo national team, having been the head coach for Brazil’s Senior National Women’s Team.
David’s major contributions to the sport include creating and implementing programs for the National Coaching Certification Program, and creating the “I Love Water Polo” program which is offered in aquatic centres and municipal programs across Canada. As the driving force behind the Canadian Water Polo League, he created the first-ever amateur league for an Olympic summer sport in Canada. He also is the author of the hugely successful Canadian Water Polo Dream Team concept.

SPECIAL RECOGNITION AWARD FOR THEIR LEADING ROLE IN PROMOTING PARASPORT
Ottawa Lions Track-and-Field Club
The Ottawa Sports Awards Committee wishes to present a Special Recognition Award to the Ottawa Lions Track and Field Club for their excellence in developing the athletes, coaches, facilities and programs for para-athletes in Ottawa.
In 2010, longtime Ottawa Lions coach Hugh Conlin took on a new role with the Lions, that of “Lead Coach” for the Athletics Canada Paralympic program for ambulatory athletes. This program became so popular that many athletes started moving to Ottawa to receive the benefits and gear up for their shot at the London 2012 Paralympic Games.
This resulted in seven new Canadian para-records being set in 2012 by Lions athletes, and seven Lions club athletes representing Canada at the Paralympics in London, along with three guide runners – over a third of the Canadian team.
In addition to the athletes, Conlin, Ian Clark, Amanda Fader and Bob Schrader also coached athletes in London.
Jason Dunkerley, along with his new guide runner, Josh Karanja, had a standout games with a silver medal in the T11 5000m and a bronze medal in the T11 1500m. The Lions also have a large para-athletics program below the Paralympic level, so watch out for future continued growth of this great program.
ARCHERY – ERIC PETERS: A member of the South Nation Archery Club, Eric scored his two recurve victories in two different countries, winning the Quebec Open for cadets and the U.S. field archery indoor championship for
youth adults. His two other medals in 2012 were both bronze coloured, one at the Ontario high school championships and the other at the Ontario Association of Archers finals in the cadet division. At the Canadian Championships, this cadet recurve shooter was fourth in the field event and sixth in the target competition.
ATHLETICS – MELISSA BISHOP: Melissa had a Cinderella season in 2012 as this Eganville runner that has been driving to Ottawa several times a year to train with the Ottawa Lions made Canada’s Olympic team to compete in
London. She did not even make the national finals in her event, the women’s 800m in 2011, but this is an athlete that does not give up. She learned from her experience, trained harder and came back in 2012 at the nationals to earn a silver medal, running a time under 2 minutes, the third Canadian woman to ever accomplish this. Her Olympic experience was a learning one but she is young and will be back. Her coaches say that, “She is so damn positive that she drives you nuts.”
BADMINTON – ANDREW D’SOUZA: Andrew currently trains at the RA Centre. In 2012, he won several tournaments at the U19 National level including the Moncton Junior Open, the Montreal Junior Open and the National Junior Championships. Internationally, he won the U19 Pan American Junior Badminton championships in July and in October Andrew
was selected to play for Canada at the Pan American Open Championships in Peru followed by the World Junior Championships in Japan. Andrew is a first-year student at the University of Ottawa and is a previous winner of our award for top badminton player in Ottawa.
BASEBALL – DEMI ORIMOLOYE: Demi, 15, had the kind of season every young Canadian player can only dream about. One year out of Little League, Demi moved up to the Ottawa Nepean Canadians to become a virtual overnight success, batting .338 with four home runs and 30 stolen bases in Ontario’s Premier League. He was named to Team Ontario’s 40-man roster despite being two years underage, and was one of the youngest players on the Canadian Junior National Team for a Florida tour. A pick-up player for the Canadian Bantam championships, he was a tournament all-star. One Major League Baseball scout went so far as to call Demi the “finest Canadian prospect he has seen in 30 years” – high praise considering Demi is not eligible to be drafted until June 2015.
BASKETBALL – COURTNAY PILYPAITIS: This Orleans native starred for her St. Peter high cchool team before becoming a member of Canada’s National Team for the past 5 years. In 2012, she led Canada by scoring 21 points in a 71-63 must-win victory over Japan at the Olympic Qualifying Tournament. This gave Canada an Olympic berth for the first time in 12 years. Courtnay was named the team MVP in this tournament as she averaged 12.6 points per game, 4 rebounds, 3.6 assists and shot 42.3 percent from the 3-point range. She continued her outstanding play in London, leading Canada to 2 victories, scoring 11 points against Great Britain and 14 points in the win over Brazil. The team made the quarterfinals and finished the Games as one of the top 8 teams in the World. Courtnay is now an assistant coach of the women’s team at her alma mater, the University of Vermont.
BIATHLON – ALEXANDRE DUPUIS: Alexandre, 17, has been competing in his chosen sport for 5 years. The Grade 12 Franco-Cité high school student is a member of the Chelsea Nordiq Biathlon Club and the Ontario Provincial Team. While competing at the 2012 Canadian Biathlon Championships in Valcartier, Quebec, Alexandre won a gold medal in the Pursuit Senior Boys race and added a 5th place finish in the Sprint Event.
BOBSLEIGH – CODY SORENSEN: An Ottawa native, Cody continues to excel as a member of Team Rush’s Canada-1 bobsled. This 26-year-old former champion hurdler consistently placed in the top-10 in World Cup circuit races in 2012, winning bronze during one stop at Whistler on the 2010 Olympic bobsled track. Cody capped his season with a seventh place finish in front of family and friends at the World Championships held in Lake Placid. He is currently in St. Moritz, Switzerland for this year’s worlds.
BOWLING (5 PIN) – EVAN DAVIS: Playing out of the Walkley Bowling Centre, Evan struck it rich in the Boys’ Bantam category provincially and nationally. At the 4 Steps to Stardom Ontario Championships, he scored 1,179 points in five games to win the provincial title. Evan narrowly missed another gold medal at the Canadian Youth Championships, where he won 11 of his 12 round-robin matches, but settled for the silver medal, after losing a gold medal tiebreaker match.
BOWLING (10 PIN)- DAVID WISKOWSKI: David is the Capital District Tenpin Association’s premier bowler. He set an all-time, sanctioned Canadian record for nine games, all events, with a score of 2,367 pins. He broke his own record by 100 pins. For the third straight year, David rolled a perfect 300 game, giving him 6 in his remarkable career. He also broke the Capital District’s three-game total of 867, which is only 33 pins off 3 perfect games. Playing out of McArthur Lanes, David has maintained a 200+ average for over 12 years.
BOXING – ERICA ADJEI: Erica is a graduate of Carleton University and has been a member of the Beaver Boxing Club for 5 years. In 2012, fighting in the 57 kilo class, she won bouts in several tournaments in Quebec and Ontario. She is the Ontario Champion in her weight class as she successfully defended her crown won in 2011. Erica is a repeat winner of our award for the sport of boxing.
BROOMBALL – TODD MUNRO: Todd was an assistant captain with the Ottawa Nationals, the 2012 Provincial and World Champions. He is a solid defenceman with soft hands and a great shot. Todd scored the winning goal in the worlds’ Gold Medal Final and was chosen to the tournament All-Star team. Leading up to and during the World Championships, Todd was a member of the host committee and contributed greatly to the success of the event.
CANOE/KAYAK (SPRINT) – RHYS HILL: Rhys has been a member of the Rideau Canoe Club since the age of 9 and during his teen years he began kayaking seriously. This commitment has seen him win 9 Canadian Championships, be a member of Canada’s National Team for the last 10 years, compete in 5 World Championships and an Olympic Games. In 2012, he finished 5th in the K-1 200 m at a World Cup race in Poland and won a bronze medal in a relay competition at another World Cup event held in Germany. Rhys attends the University of Ottawa majoring in business.
CANOE/KAYAK (WHITEWATER) – MICHAEL TAYLER: Michael began kayaking at age 8 and over the years he has won 5 Junior National Titles. In 2012, he competed in 5 World Cup Events in Europe and at age 20 he was Canada’s only entry in white water slalom at the London Olympic Games. Michael attends Carleton University and competes for the Ottawa River Runners Club where he helps out coaching young up and coming kayakers.
CRICKET – AYOUB AHMADZAI: Ayoub came to Ottawa from Afghanistan where he had played as a member of their national U-19 side. While playing in Ottawa, 2012 saw him set a new standard in the Challenge Division, scoring 782 runs with a top single game score of 212, also a record. A complete player, Ayoub had 1,363 runs during OVCC games, including 3 centuries and 5 fifties, 25 wickets as a spin bowler and 26 catches in 32 matches as a fieldsman.
CURLING – CRAIG SAVILL: Craig throws the lead rocks for the Glen Howard curling team, the current 2012 Canadian Tim Horton’s Brier Champions and the reigning World Men’s Champions. Craig lives and works in Ottawa and curls locally with the Ottawa Curling Club when not on tour with the Howard rink. He has won 4 gold medals at the World Championship level – 2 as a Junior and 2 as a Senior. Nicknamed “Sav” on the tour, this 34-year-old is a repeat winner of our curling award.
CYCLING – EVAN McNEELY: Evan represented Canada at the 2012 Pan American Mountain Bike Championships in Mexico where he finished an impressive fourth in the U-23 cross country event. In November 2012, he successfully defended his Canadian U-23 Cyclocross Championships title in Surrey, B.C. When he is not on a bike, Evan is a mechanical engineering student at Carleton University. He is currently away competing in a cyclocross race in Kentucky.
DIVING – HENRY McKAY: Now diving in the 12-13 age group, Henry demonstrated that he is fully capable of competing against divers older than him by once again making the Canadian Junior National Team. In 2012, he won a gold medal on Platform at the Quebec Provincials in Pointe Claire, a bronze on the 3 metre springboard at the John Dickinson Ontario Provincials and a gold medal on Platform and a bronze on the 1 metre board at the Ontario Provincials. While competing at the Canadian Junior National Championships in Saskatoon, Henry earned a silver medal on the 1 metre springboard and a bronze medal on the platform. He is a repeat winner of this award.
EQUESTRIAN – JODY SCHLOSS: The 2012 London Paralympic Games were the pinnacle of Jody’s 15-year recovery from a car crash in her early twenties that left her in a coma for three months, and in hospital for three years. This Barrhaven resident put her studies towards a Master’s degree in Disability Studies on hold and qualified for the Games by riding in many International Para-dressage competitions. Her hard work and skills earned her a top-10 finish in London.
FENCING – JOHN WRIGHT: John is a member of the Ottawa Fencing Club and has been fencing for 13 years. In 2012, while competing with Canada’s National Team at a World Cup Event in Stockholm, he defeated the reigning world champion. Also, while competing in the Men’s Epee 3 person team event at the Argentina World Cup, John won a silver medal, defeating Team USA, the reigning World Team Champions. When not training, John attends the University of Ottawa, majoring in history.
FIELD HOCKEY – JOCELYN MITCHELL: This former member of the Nepean Nighthawks club and Earl of March high school teams is now a member of the Canadian Women’s National Team. Jocelyn played her first international games for Canada in Victoria, B.C. in eight test matches against Team USA. She also played in a World League Round 1 game held in November in Trinidad and Tobago. While playing against Uruguay, Jocelyn scored a key goal to help Canada finish at 5-0 and qualify for round 2.This 23-year-old player now has 8 caps to her credit and is a former winner of our award, having earned it in 2011. She was recently selected the 2012 Ottawa Field Hockey Athlete of the Year by her sport.
FIGURE SKATING – ALAINE CHARTRAND: After winning the Eastern Ontario Sectional title and placing a strong fourth at the Skate Canada Challenge, Alaine was an impressive ninth in senior women’s singles at her first Canadian Figure Skating championships. Her results earned her two Junior Grand Prix international assignments, where she finished sixth in Zagreb, Croatia, and seventh in Lake Placid, New York. This 16-year-old Nepean Skating Club competitive athlete of the year also won gold medals at the Scarboro Skate, the Minto Summer Skate, the Autumn Skate and the Octoberfest Skating competition.
FOOTBALL – TYLER CRAPIGNA: Tyler is a repeat winner of our award for football from last year. He is a kicker on the McMaster Marauders football team, 2012 OUA Yates Cup Champions, 2012 Mitchell Bowl Champions and 2012 Vanier Cup Finalist. Tyler was a big part of his team’s success as he went 18 for 18 on field goals in the 2012 season for 100% accuracy, the longest from 46 yards. He also was 100% on point after touchdowns, hitting 30 out of 30 attempts to rank him the best in the CIS. He was selected an OUA & CIS All-Canadian First Team All-Star Placekicker.
FOOTBALL (AUSSIE RULES) – EMMA DICKINSON: Emma Dickinson had an extremely successful crossover from rugby player into Australian Rules Football player in 2012. She was recognized as the Ontario AFL women’s rookie of the year, beating out several national team players. In her first year in the sport, Emma made Northern Lights, the Canadian national team. Also an eager off-field volunteer, this hardworking player was recognized by her Ottawa Swans club as best and fairest women’s player, and overall MVP.
FOOTBALL (GAELIC) – LAURA CLARKE: Since moving to Ottawa from Ireland with her family, Laura has been a mainstay with the Ottawa Gaels Gaelic Football Club. She cheers on her whole family as every member plays this game while Laura shines in the Senior Ladies League. She has shown a tireless amount of energy in off-field club activities, serving on numerous committees, fundraising for the club, organizing the Ottawa Gaels Golf tournament and doing public relations work. Laura is an invaluable asset to not only the Ottawa Gaels but to the growth of Gaelic football in the Ottawa region.
FOOTBALL (TOUCH) – KATRINA FOLLIS: Katrina plays for the Ottawa Jets in the Ottawa Nepean Touch Football League. This centre had an outstanding season, finishing among the league’s top scorers and demonstrating a great ability to run clean pass patterns and catch the ball in heavy traffic areas. Katrina is also a strong defensive player and her two-way play is one of the reasons that the Jets were able to improve their ranking to fourth on the demanding Ontario Trillium Tour.
GOALBALL – AMY KNEEBONE: Amy was Canada’s top scorer at the London 2012 Paralympic Games goalball tournament, scoring 4 goals. She led the Algonquin Collegebased Canadian Women’s Goalball team to a first-place finish in group play with a record of three wins and one loss. Amy scored a goal in the quarterfinal game before Finland replied with a late equalizer and the overtime gamewinner. At age 22, this was the second Paralympics for Amy so her future looks good as she will be a mainstay of Team Canada for many years to come.
GOLF – ALLEN McGEE: Allen is one of the most consistent golfers in the Ottawa area as he has won this award for his sport many times. In 2012, he had another stellar year, teaming with Kyle Koski to win the Ottawa Valley Golf Association 2-man Ryder Cup Competition. Individually, he won the inaugural championship in the Flagstick Golf Magazine BCC Open, the Ottawa Valley Golf Association“A” Class City & District Championship for the 6th consecutive year and the club championship at his home club. He placed well in every event he entered most often beating players many years younger than himself.
GYMNASTICS (ARTISTIC) – SAMUEL ZAKUTNEY: For the second straight year, Samuel left the Canadian artistic gymnastics championships as a national champion. After winning the Canadian Argo title in 2011, he graduated to the Tyro class in 2012 and used his polished skills to capture another national level gold medal. A member of the National Capital Boys’ Gymnastics Academy, Samuel also placed second in Tyro at the Ontario championships, which were held at his home club, the Nepean-Corona School of Gymnastics. In October, he attended the Belgium-Germany- Canada junior training camp in Ghent, Belgium.
GYMNASTICS (RHYTHMIC) – CLEO PAGE: Now 5 years into her competitive career, Cleo shows a strong commitment, dedication and talent level in her chosen sport of rhythmic gymnastics. In her first year in the 13-15 age category, this Ottawa Rhythmic Gymnastics Club member excelled at the Ontario championships, winning a gold in ribbon, a silver in rope and a bronze in the free event to place second all-around in the Level 5-A competition, narrowly missing the top spot by less than an eighth of a point. Cleo’s goal now is to become an all-around provincial champion.
HOCKEY (BALL) – FANNIE DESFORGES: In 2012, Fannie was the top scorer and MVP at the Women’s Ball Hockey National Championships, where her team won a silver medal. Fannie is an exceptional athlete as she also captains the U of O women’s ice hockey team where she was a 2nd-team league all-star and team MVP. She’s also gained the nickname of “Fearless Fannie” on the Red Bull Crashed Ice circuit, where she’s won races in Quebec City and Niagara Falls.
HOCKEY (ICE) – CODY CECI: Cody was born in Orleans and played defence for the Ottawa 67’s Ontario Hockey League major junior team. In the 2011-2012 season, he was the second leading scoring defenceman in the OHL with 17 goals and 43 assists for 60 points. Cody added another 2 goals and 13 assists during the 18 playoff games and was selected a second-team OHL All-star. He played against the Russian Junior Team that toured Canada in
the fall and for his efforts he was invited to the National Junior Team training camp. In the spring of 2012, the Ottawa Senators made him their first round draft choice, going 15th overall. In his first 39 games with the 67’s this season, he had 10 goals and 27 assists for 37 points before getting traded to the Owen Sound Attack at the deadline.
HOCKEY (SLEDGE) – DENIS LAPALME: Denis is a 4-time Paralympian who continues to play sledge hockey at the local, regional and provincial level. In 2012, he was a member of the gold medal-winning team at the first-ever
sledge hockey competition held during an Ontario Winter Games. Known as an innovator, it was his idea to use extra picks on the goalie stick and spikes on the blocker and catching glove to enable the goaltender to move around
better. Denis is a popular player, often serving as a captain on teams on which he plays. He is giving back to his sport by taking younger players under his wing, coaching them and giving them a desire to have fun while playing the game.
JUDO – TONY WALBY: Tony is a longtime member of the Takahashi Martial Arts School. Now competing with the National Visually Impaired Judo Team, he had a great 2012 season winning the U.S. Open and finishing 5th
at the German Open. Tony made Canada’s Paralympic Team and finished a very respectable 7th at the London Games. Much admired by the younger members of his club, Tony gives back to his sport by teaching and coaching others. He has won our award for judo many times before as he is simply the best from Ottawa.
LACROSSE – JAKE FOX: Jake was selected to be a member of the Team Ontario Midget Boys’ box lacrosse team, a team that went on to win the Canadian Box Lacrosse Championships. Playing as a member of the
Gloucester Griffins midget team and the Gloucester Griffins Junior B team, Jake scored 15 goals and had 13 assists in 10 games as an underage rookie, thereby winning Rookie of the Year honours for the Griffins. Jake also
plays field lacrosse, playing for his high school (St. Peter) and the EDGE Academy in Toronto. He is currently attending Trinity-Pawling Prep School in New York on a scholarship and has committed himself to play field lacrosse for John Hopkins University. Jake gives back to his sport by serving as a referee and volunteer coach for the Gloucester Minor Lacrosse Association.
LAWN BOWLING – GIANNI BERTAZZO: A member of the Elmdale Lawn Bowling Club, Gianni qualified to represent District 16 in three Ontario Championships. Gianni was the skip of the district team that won the silver medal at the provincial novice championships along with teammates Paul Juneau and William Smalluk. The same three players recorded 2 wins and 2 losses at the provincial men’s senior championships and were joined by Rob Rienzo to make a foursome to play in the Ontario men’s fours championship.
MODERN PENTATHLON – MELANIE McCANN: Melanie, age 23, has competed for 9 years in this 5-sport event that includes fencing, swimming, running, pistol shooting and equestrian all in one day. In 2012, she won the National Championships for the third year in a row. At the World Championships in Italy, she was the only Canadian to advance to the final. At a World Cup event in China, Melanie finished 7th, winning the fencing part of the competition. In a similar competition in Hungary, she finished 9th, which led her to the London Olympics where she represented Canada well, placing 11th – the top Olympic result for a Canadian in our country’s Modern Pentathlon history.
ORIENTEERING – EMILY KEMP: This 20-year-old Junior member of the Ottawa Orienteering Club won the sprint and long distance events at the 2012 Canadian Orienteering Championships. This was an outstanding performance as she ran cautiously due to a broken arm suffered earlier in the summer. Emily also won a bronze medal at the Junior World Orienteering Championships held in Slovakia, competing against 139 athletes from 33 countries, which made her the first North American athlete to ever win a medal at a Junior or Senior World Championship. Emily’s outstanding season in European competitions led the World of Orienteering to nominate Emily for one of the highest level achievements in 2012. She is currently studying at a University in St-Étienne, France and training with the French National Team.
PARASPORT – JASON DUNKERLEY: This former Ottawa Sports Awards Male Athlete of the Year winner continues to excel and improve with age. Jason has been the Ottawa Lions’ Most Outstanding Para Athlete from 2010 to 2012. In 2012, with a new guide runner (Josh Karanja) and coach (Ian Clark), Jason won the 1,500 m and 5,000 m at the National Para Championships in his T11 class. He continued his outstanding season by winning a silver medal in the 5,000m at the London Paralympic Games and a bronze in the 1,500 m, running personal-best times in both races. For his efforts at these Games, Jason was chosen the Most Outstanding Para Athlete in Canada by Athletics Canada. His time of 4:07.56 established a new Canadian record. He is a repeat winner of our award for the best Parasport Athlete in Ottawa.
RINGETTE – JENNIFER GABEL: Jennifer had an outstanding season in 2012 as she was a member of the Nepean Ravens U19 AA Ringette Team that won a Provincial Championship and also was on the Eastern Region Ontario Winter Games gold medalwinning team, making her a two-time Ontario Champion in the same year. The Carleton University neurosciences student was also selected to play on the U19 Canada East Team that won World Championships gold for the first time in a decade, ending a long run by Finland. Her play did not go unnoticed as she was selected in the 2nd round of the 2012 National Ringette League entry draft by the Gloucester Devils where is excelling as one of the league’s top rookies.
ROWING – DAVID BLAIR: David, 21, has been a member of the Ottawa Rowing Club for 7 years and is a 4th-year Carleton University humanities student. In 2012, in a mixed four event with cox over 1,000 m, his crew finished 6th at the World Cup in Munich and 7th at the Paralympics in London.
RUGBY – JULIANNE ZUSSMAN: Julianne was born and raised in Ottawa. She attended Ashbury College before moving to Montreal to attend McGill University. Now a five-year member of the National Team, this 23-year-old
helped Canada to an undefeated record at the NACRA regional women’s sevens World Cup qualifier last summer at Twin Elm Rugby Park. Now based in B.C. with the National Team, Julianne has 15 career international caps.
RUNNING (CROSS-COUNTRY) – YVES SIKUBWABO: A repeat winner of this award, Yves continues to dominate in this sport. In 2012, he joined the University of Guelph cross-country team, helping them win the OUA and CIS Championship crowns. He finished 2nd in the OUA 10 km race, earning him a First Team All-Star ranking and the OUA Rookie of the Year Award. In the CIS race, he finished 7th to become a First Team All-Canadian in his first year of competition at this level. While running for the Ottawa Lions in 2012, he won a national silver medal in the junior men’s 8 km, so the Lions Track & Field Club honoured him with their Most Outstanding Cross-Country Athlete Award for 2012.
RUNNING (ROAD RACING) – MARY DAVIES: This native of New Zealand now lives and trains in Ottawa. She is a member of the OAC Racing team who had an unbelievable season in 2012. Mary won the 10K Barrhaven Run for Rogers House, the Emilie’s 5K Run, setting a new course record while running a new PB for this distance, and the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon in a personalbest time of 2:28:56. She also added a second place finish in the Edmonton Half- Marathon held in August. Her goal is to represent New Zealand in the World Marathon Championships in Russia in 2013 and the Rio Olympics in 2016.
SAILING – PETER WOOD: In 2012, Peter had an excellent year sailing in the International 2.4 Metre Sailboat class. He placed first in the Canadian Championships held here in Ottawa at the Nepean Sailing Club and first again at the Canada Games test event held in Sherbrooke, Quebec. Peter followed this up by winning bronze medals on the International scene, first in the United States 2.4 Meter Sailboat Championships and at the North American Championships, both held in Florida.
SAILING (ABLE SAIL) – RALPH NOLTING: Ralph suffered a stroke in 2011 and was hospitalized for over a year. He returned to one of his loves, sailing, in June of 2012. Paralyzed completely on his right side, he was able to win the Silver Fleet Competition in the Nepean Cup and was awarded the prize for the best results by a first time competitor. He then had another health setback but returned in Sept. to win a third place in the Mobility Cup sailing silver fleet division against teams from across North America. Ralph had dreams of representing Canada someday but a massive stroke in Nov. 2012 claimed his life. To the many friends he left behind, he is known for his determination, his courage and his talent.
SKIING (ALPINE) – DUSTIN COOK: Dustin opened the 2012-13 World Cup alpine ski season in late October with his best-ever result, a 22nd-place finish during the men’s giant slalom in Solden, Austria. The Mont Ste. Marie racer from Ottawa was also one of the top alpine racers in North America in 2011-12. Dustin won the Super-G title and was runner-up in the downhill at the United States men’s ski championships, also winning the Super-G gold and placing 7th in downhill at the Canadians. On the North American development circuit, he was 6th overall, placing 3rd in downhill, 6th in giant slalom and 14th in Super-G.
SKIING (CROSS COUNTRY) – BEN WILKINSON-ZAN: Ben attends Carleton
University and is a member of the Ontario Ski Team. In 2012, after qualifying in the heats and semi-finals, this 18-year-old won the 1.2 km Junior Sprint National Championship race held at the Nordic Centre in Mont Ste. Anne, Quebec. Ben is a member of the National Talent Squad which recognizes him as a developing skier capable of representing Canada on the International scene in the near future.
SKIING (FREESTYLE) – MITCHELL CLARKE: This 17-year-old began skiing at 2 ½ years and is now in his 7th year of competing in freestyle skiing. While representing the Camp Fortune Freestyle Ski Club, he won a silver medal in the Halfpipe competition and a 4th in Slopestyle at the Ontario Provincial Championships. At the National Juniors, Mitchell finished 9th in the Slopestyle event and someday hopes to make the Ontario and National Teams so he can compete at the X Games.
SNOWBOARDING – QUINCY KORTE-KING: In 2012, Quincy represented Canada at the Winter Youth Olympic Games in Innsbruck, Austria, placing fifth in the halfpipe and seventh in slopestyle. She was also 14th in lopestyle in a U.S. Revolution Tour event. At the Canadian Open, she finished 26th in the halfpipe and 27th in slopestyle as a 16-year-old. Her mother Susan (Lula) Korte is a former national alpine ski team racer. Quincy is a repeat
winner of this award for her sport.
SOCCER – GILLIAN BAGGOTT: Gillian is in her final year at the University of Ottawa where she led her team to a season that saw them allow only one goal in league play all season. Known as a tough defender, her play won her the Chantal Navert Memorial Award as CIS player of the year in women’s soccer, only the second Gee-Gees player to ever win this award. When not playing for the Gee-Gees, Gillian played for the Ottawa Fury women’s team that won the W-League Championship.
SOFTBALL – GRACE LONERGAN: For the 3rd year in a row, Grace once again shines as our best softball player, having led her team to a silver medal at the Junior-level Provincials. She continued her good play at the Canadian
National Championships held in Nova Scotia, winning the All-Star Catcher award as the country’s best at her position for players between 18 and 21 years of age. As the starting catcher on the U of O women’s team, Grace caught all 29 games played this season, leading this team in RBIs and runs.
SPECIAL OLYMPICS – JACOB MATHEWS: Jacob, an all-around athlete, has been competing for 15 years in his favorite sports that include soccer, snowshoeing, swimming, 5-pin bowling and athletics. He has attended 9
Provincial Games in 4 different sports and has also competed at the National level in 3 different sports. In 2012, Jacob won a gold medal and 2 silver medals in swimming at the Provincial Games. At the National Winter
Games, he won a silver medal in the 100 m snowshoe race and added gold medals in the 400 m, 800 m and 1,600 m. He is currently with Team Canada competing in the Special Olympics World Winter Games in South Korea.
SPEED SKATING (LONG-TRACK) – IVANIE BLONDIN: With an explosive start to her 2012-2013 season in November and December, Ivanie is carrying on Ottawa’s proud tradition in long-track-speed skating. This 22-year-old Gloucester Concordes athlete began her World Cup season in the Netherlands, placing 10th individually in the 3,000 m and winning a bronze in the team pursuit. In Russia, she won a World Cup silver medal in the mass start event. Ivanie capped the 2012 season in style, finishing 9th in the 5,000 m in Kazakhstan, and then joining Christine Nesbitt and Brittany Schussler to win a team pursuit gold medal. She is now training with the national team based in Calgary.
SPEED SKATING (SHORT-TRACK) – SAMANTHA MORRISON: Despite relocating to Calgary and focusing her efforts on longtrack, Samantha still excelled when she competed on the short-track circuit in 2012. A silver medalist at the Ontario Championships, she placed 7th overall in the Junior Women’s category at the Canadian Short-Track Speed Skating Championships, also winning a relay bronze with Team Ontario, which included two of her Gloucester Concordes clubmates.
SQUASH – KARIM OSMAN: In 2012, Karim won the top division of play at all three major squash tournaments held in the Ottawa area. He also won the ODSA Cup and maintained his ODSA #1 ranking throughout 2012. While competing in the Squash Canada University Championships held in Calgary, this Carleton student won the consolation plate.
SWIMMING – ERIKA SELTENREICHHODGSON: While swimming for the Nepean- Kanata Barracudas, Erika set 27 club records, including 16 in 2012. She finished 4th at the Canadian Olympic Trials, breaking the National record (ages 15-17) in the 200 m individual medley, one of 3 times that she broke this record. Her next record-setting performance came at the Junior Pan Pacific meet in Hawaii, where she won the women’s 200 IM. She earned her first international gold medal at the Mare Nostrom race in France in the women’s 200 IM, posting a new national record time of 2:13.94. Headed to UBC next fall, this John McCrae Secondary School student is the third-fastest Canadian woman ever in this event and ranks 2nd nationally.
TABLE TENNIS – EUGENE ZHEN WANG: A member of Canada’s Olympic team for the 2012 Summer Games in London, Eugene scored a personal best men’s singles result when he reached the quarter-finals of the International Table Tennis Federation’s World Tour Slovenian Open, losing to Chinese legend Ma Long. From February to April, the Canadian champion ranked in the world’s top 100.
TAEKWONDO – KERRY McRAE: Kerry is ranked #97 in the world for the Senior Women’s Middleweight class. In 2012, this Phoenix Taekwondo Martial Arts Academy member won a silver medal at both the Junior National Championships and the Junior National Team Trials. She continued her excellent season with bronze medals at the Senior National Championships and the Canadian International Open.
TENNIS – CHRISTA CAMERON: Competing in the women’s age 55-59 age class, Christa was undefeated in major national-level tennis competitions in 2012, winning Eastern Canadian and Canadian titles in singles and doubles, with Michelle Hall. Christa advanced to play in the World Senior Tennis Championships, winning two matches before losing to the top seed in the third round.
TRIATHLON – JOANNA BROWN: Joanna took the next step in her evolution into a world-class triathlete in 2012. In her first season out of junior ranks, this 19-year-old won four medals in five races on the Pan Am Cup circuit – silvers in Mazatlan, Mexico and Dallas (Texas), gold in Magog (Quebec) and a bronze in Buffalo (New York). The highlight of her season came in Auckland, New Zealand when she captured the bronze in the U23 World Championships. A week later, Joanna was back in Canada helping her University of Guelph Gryphons win both the OUA and CIS cross-country running championships.
VOLLEYBALL – KARINA KRUEGER SCHWANKE: A native of Brazil, Karina has lived in Ottawa these last 5 years is now a Canadian citizen. She plays for the OUA silvermedallist University of Ottawa women’s volleyball team. Individually, Karina was an OUA 1st Team All-Star and was selected to the OUA Final Four All-Star Team. She finished second in Ontario and 9th in Canada in overall scoring. Karina was also selected the Gee-Gees MVP.
WATER POLO – ALEC TASCHEREAU: Filled with perseverance and competitiveness, this Ottawa Titans Water Polo Club player made his debut with the Canadian Men’s Senior Water Polo Team in 2012. Not only was he named to the National Team for games against Hungary and tournaments in Italy and Spain, Alec also played for Canada in the FINA World League preliminary competition. During the Canadian Men’s Senior Championships, he helped the Toronto Golden Jets win the bronze medal by scoring 14 goals in five games and being selected a Tournament All-Star.
WHEELCHAIR RUGBY – PATRICE DAGENAIS: Competing in his first Paralympic Games, Patrice received a significant amount of court time throughout the London 2012 wheelchair rugby tournament. The Ottawa Stongers player helped Canada to a heartstopping 50-49 semi-final victory over the U.S. to secure a place in the championship match and an eventual silver medal. Patrice, a former junior hockey player who lost the use of his legs in a construction accident at age 18, is still young in his wheelchair rugby career and is expected to play a key role for the aging Canadian team in the future.
WRESTLING – TORIN MacFADYEN: Born with judo and wrestling in his blood, Torin is leading the next generation of standout Takahashi athletes. Torin is a judo National Champion who finished fifth at the Pan American Youth Judo Championships. He also represented Canada at the U17 Pan Am
Wrestling Championships in Venezuela, competing in the 50 kg division. Here, this Tsunami Academy athlete won all three of his matches to earn gold. In 2012, Torin also won the Ontario Winter Games wrestling title, the
Ontario Provincials title and placed second at OFSAA for the second year in a row.
